So we’ve made friends with a lot of people that play supportive roles in our day to day life. We basically go to the same restaurants all the time, we’re friends with our dog walker and groomer, and there are other random folks here and there. As cranky as I am I’m usually very polite to people.

Jody and I have committed to getting take out more to support our local restaurants, the groomer who is out of work for a couple weeks will be visiting the house to take care of the pups, and the dog walker is coming even though jody and I are home.

The pandemic doesn’t affect us financially at all and it doesn’t seem right that we save a couple bucks being at home because we can.

Additionally, we finally have our food reserves so far in the black we are letting our neighbors help themselves to ingredients that they may find themselves without. We have a friend that owns a ranch that gifts us a cow every year and we’ve been handing out American wagyu (this does pain me).

And should things go pear shaped we have increased the sleeping capacity of the house from three to nine should people need a safe place to lay down their heads.

I’m still tremendously concerned the economic downturn will result in chaos in the streets, and idle hands can lead to felonies…but in the meantime we’re trying to be positive and be supportive to those that were not as prepared as us.

@DougNg great attitude and perspective. If everyone approaches this crisis similarly, we’ll come out stronger on the other side. Keep your chins up everyone. Things are gonna be extremely challenging very soon, but if we all pull together and do what we have to do to stop the spread of this virus, we will get through it.

It’s interesting how behaviors have changed. When I see people at the grocery store it’s as if nothing is going on. But, I’ve noticed that there seems to be more urgency on the road. I’ve had more people tailgating me in the past two weeks than ever. When out on walks people are still friendly and say hello but everyone gives each other a wide berth. And of course there’s the paranoia if someone coughs or sneezes. I automatically assume that everyone is potentially infected and keep my distance. It’s like we’re in The Thing movie and nobody knows who’s infected. Bums my son out when I tell him we can’t go to places like Target if we can avoid it.

I was told the same when I asked someone where the selfish bastards were actually storing their hord.
I walked into town yesterday and popped into my friend’s bakery. They told me that they are simply selling out of everything before the end of the day and that people must simply be freezing things as their produce just doesn’t keep for long.

I went into Waitrose and they actually had a security guard permanently posted to guard the painkillers. In bloody WAITROSE in fucking Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. This leafy market town is a sea of middle class wankers driving brand new SUVs or pushing £1000 buggies.

                              Madness!!!

I said weeks ago, this is going to get to the point where you’re going to have to participate or get left behind. It’s a binary function, there won’t be an in between.

We’ve been trying to just buy groceries as normal before having to dig into our reserves, yesterday I couldn’t get what we needed for the first time. Went to four stores.

I’m going to qualify this by saying I used to be an FDA investigator and have seen lots of different types of food manufacturing: most food manufacturers operate at full capacity most of the time. Because foods are a perishable product, they try to equilibrate supply to demand.

There won’t be a sudden surge of the food supply because of the increased demand.

If half the population buys twice as much food, the other half is going to have to scrounge for the percentage that usually goes to waste

I think buying 20,000 rolls of TP is gross and dumb, and hoarding face masks is morally … questionable.

With this said, having a well stocked freezer is something everyone should do. Ideally we should have done that before the crisis. Short of that, doing it now is smarter than not doing it at all, IMHO.

There's apparently a Chinese (?) proverb that says: "The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The next best time is now." Not sure if authentic, but still quite wise I think.

We have 3 freezers in the house.  Have done for years.

One is in the kitchen and contains stuff I need regularly for cooking, and ice which Paula needs regularly for G&T's.  It is always full to overflowing.

One is in the basement and contains stock, meals that I have doubled up on when originally cooked - stews, chili, curries & fish pies, frozen veg and fish.  It is always full.

One is in the shed and is our meat supply.  I have always bought in bulk infrequently, and I guess we were halfway through a cycle, so it is about half full.
