              Very nice jacket indeed.

Is that whipcord the same color than the IHM-10 Deck Jacket in navy?

              Cheers

These are sweet. Turned out very nicely with the grey wool mix.

Much lighter to wear (and carry) than the Melton, and the collar appears more proportionate to the coats shorter length.

I wish - would love to handle one, and compare it to the IHW-05 sitting in the closet…

*Which would also help balance out the huge collar that could stand to be a bit shorter; I would also widen the button rows a touch, if it wouldn't require having to resew them through the quilted lining.]

This one has a more obviously casual feel with the whipcord, so the shorter length (which is actually a tad longer) and thinner collar fabric (which looks shorter) work really well.

@Giles @Alex @Sam Anybody have any idea on how much less this one weighs (in XL, if possible)?  I have no idea how much the wool/alpaca tips the scales; but 11oz. whipcord vs. 32oz. Melton…

This came out much prettier than I expected.  I've got to shuffle lesser used clothing to fund this. 😎

I think the broad lapels, longer collar and shorter length of the melton wool version is more in keeping with the original pea coat concept. It would make sense to modernise the cut for the whipcord version as the material lends itself to a cleaner, more conservative silhouette.

Personally I’d love the OG version in my wardrobe.

                                  Ok, thanks, Alex!

@neph93  Most traditional peas are cut on the longer side; most Bridge and Great coats with notably large collars are even longer…

The IH lapels (which are actually relatively short; go look at the Private White peas to see what I mean), length, button row spacing, and hand pocket placement/style are all non-traditional. As are the storm cuffs.

The purpose of increased coat length AND collar size is congruent: increased coverage, for warmth/protection from the elements.  So it strike me as quite strange, in terms of both functional design and visual symmetry, to have one (+ storm cuffs) and not the other.

I certainly agree that I admire mine for the reasons we all admire most things Iron Heart, but a shorter collar and lighter weight (such as is the case here) make much more intuitive sense to me as the 'Iron Heart' modernized interpretation of a classic.

Horses for courses old bean. All my pea coats have been pretty short and I’m a fan of the large collar on shirts as well as many styles of jacket. The shorter collar is very modern and I prefer something a little more atemporal.

When I say "longer side', I simply mean 'covers one's ass'; not like, knee length.

I certainly agree that tiny collars are fully out of control…  But I favor neither exaggeration, large nor small; 'tis a matter of good proportion, old chap.  😉  The eye knows it when it sees it...  ???

I've been looking for a pea coat for quite some time now and am now considering this beautiful piece (or the Melton Wool version).

I want to make sure I get the fit right and being an absolute newbie to IH jackets I though I'd ask you for help.

There are only 3XL (Whipcord) and 2XL/3XL (Melton) left, so at least there's not many room for confusion. Either they fit, or they don't.  :o

As a reference I made up a table which includes some shirts I own and - most importantly - a wool coat that fits me perfectly. All measures taken with IH method.

I wear all Western Shirts with a Tee or thin long sleeve underneath. The 3XL Wabash has enough room to even wear it as a jacket with a Tee and Sweater underneath.

My only concern with the Pea Coats really are Shoulders and P2P being too large.
The thickness of the fabric plays a role here too, I would assume?
Any experience on how Western Shirt sizing transfers to this Pea Coat?

                                        Any advice is appreciated! 😉

                                        Use it or lose it.

Welcome to the forum @weftyarn. Hard to say what would work. That is a very well put together table, but it is comparing apples to oranges, to a degree.

I can say this, I am a «small» XL in most IH shirts. I normally take an L in heavy IH jackets. XL’s work, but only with layers under. Based on that I’d say the melton wool jacket in XXL would be good for you as it is XXL and it seems you are between XXL and XXXL in shirts.

My stomach feeling was also to go for the Melton XXL with its more narrow shoulder. Now I only need to figure if I like the silhouette. I just would have loved that Whipcord‘s cut plus the Alpaca lining 🙏🏽

Anyone with a Whipcord XXL looking to sell/exchange? 😅
