Whenever I used to take trips to Tokyo, my favourite store was Mandarake in Shibuya.  It's a manga/anime/model shop with all sorts of cool vintage stuff from the early days of kaiju movies and whatnot.  Plus it's down in a musky basement, which is fun in itself.

Of course, non-geeks/nerds need probably not apply for that one  😃

The coolest stuff about Tokyo for me, though, was not the shops at all.  It was wandering around and finding little gems.  Remnants of yore.  The anachronistic, wire-strewn alleyways hidden within a gleaming future.

every store is brilliant in japan and worth walking into. i always find small shops and huge malls really interesting in the shibuya and harajuku area. it's even worth popping into aoyama or shinjuku or even ueno.. i could go on.. but at the end of the day, it really depends on what you're looking for/into and how much time you have. you can't really go wrong in tokyo..

Is Mandarake the store with something like 2 or 3 sublevels? I'm sure i've been there before and I concur, very cool store

If you're a music fan there are tons of great record stores throughout the different districts. I'm a fan of Disk Union which is a chain store. They have a great selection of genres on vinyl and cd, good prices, and their stuff is always in immaculate condition.

Yes definitely am a vinyl fan!  Will need to check it out to see if I can find some albums that I have been looking for.

Just been doing a little research, and there's a few different Mandarake stores in Tokyo now, so what you're describing could well be one of them.  The Akihabara one apparently has 8 freakin' floors!  I just used to go to the basement one in Shibuya, cos Shibuya's kinda cool and I didn't know about the other ones.

this may not be PG but if you have some free time on your own. japan's adult stores are definitely worth a visit..
