The gauged arches look complicated. Are the bricks cut to size and shape onsite, or do they arrive as a kit?

I think that they'll be great when they're done.

I agree with @Giles that @Steffen's door sounds great. I want to see pictures when it's done.

In the "old" days, they would have been cut and rubbed to shape on site, but this is a very difficult skill to find these days, and when you do, it comes at a cost….

So, I'm having them cut and bonded to steel load-bearing lintels with 5mm joints off-site.  Well, actually 2 of the windows are bricked up to replicate the look of a Georgian window-tax bricked in window...

I've just found out that the large arch will way about 700 kilos - yee gods.

Those arches will look great when done. Shame there isn't the proliferation of skills anymore to do this the old way, but it doesn't surprise me, the house I just moved into is a new build, some of the brickwork is interesting! The builder admits that they struggle to find bricklayers; sometimes it's any old trade lending a hand !!

As you mention, anyone who is skilled and experienced can command a premium and is booked up months or years in advance. I have a family friend who only does 'premium' and listed restorations or extensions now…

Whilst we have a hiatus whilst I get the joists built, I fixed a maglock to the rear gates and bought a scaffold tower (not tall enough  ::), so have ordered another lift).....

Oh, and I had a pallet of radiators delivered.  I know from experience that to move these, each one is a 2 person (3 to 4 for the large one at the bottom), so as I am on my own atm, they will stay outside the front door until I find some muscle….
