      @Giles:

      Me and Mrs G are a little worried about Denim Sailor.  Pretty sure he has not posted since "THE JUMP"….........

        Damn, I should have ordered a mile - much nicer ring to it…............

          Is it too late to order the additional 260 yards? You could still get a mile of denim.

          Just on a side note, you English really came up with a ridiculous system of measurement; 3ft to the yard, 1760yds to the mile? This was intended to be as complicated as possible, wasn't it?

          Of course, to our detriment, we never bothered to convert to metric here in the States.

            worse than that Chris - you actually feckin' changed some of those complicated measurements to to make sure it was even more difficult!  😉

            fluid ounces, pints and gallons all spring to mind . . .  ::)

              . . . oh, and I forgot the US survey foot measure is different (bigger) from the International foot measure . . . . crazy 😶

                  To be fair, I should mention that I work with land descriptions in Texas, where we inherited a mixture of archaic measurements. I have to deal with the silly units left over from the Spanish days, too. Anyone here know how long a vara is? How about a chain? Or a labor, though technically that's a measure of area, not length.

                  Things would be so much easier if we just joined the rest of the world and went metric. One of the few truly worthwhile things created by the French…

                    yeah I need to deal with it too . . . on a daily basis

                    on a fairly decent sized building (250,000 m2) i have, we ended up in a debate about the gross area because the client hired some US surveyors on the checking side . . . they converted the measurements to feet and inches - did their math and came back with a quite noticable difference after reconverting . . .

                    it led to hours of unnecessary discussions and meeting with the client who thought he was paying too much for the the building . . . only to realise if the guys who were checking had actually been able to:

                    1. count
                    2. use SI
                    3. or at the very least use the same number of decimal places in both converting then reconverting

                    then there wasn't actually an issue . . . doh  :-\

                      Chain =22 yards or 100 links, 10 chains to the furlong, I think.
