Viberg Chelsea Boot - Rowdy Dachshund

Canadian bootmakers Viberg are back doing what they do best: making classically inflected, peerlessly constructed boots that let their leathers do the talking. The leather in question is the mocha-hued ‘Rowdy Dachshund’ from Chicago's Horween Tannery. The fat-liquored and hand-waxed cowhide makes for a robust leather with exceptional pull-up and an immediate patina. The Chelsea boot construction leans on its clean lines and single-piece upper to create a timelessly cool silhouette with a touch of rough n’ readiness.

Studio D'artisan Kakishibu-Dyed Plaid Flannel Shirt

Another entry into Studio D’Artisan’s roster of stand-out fabrics, the Kakishibu-Dyed Plaid Flannel offers a thoroughly Japanese riff on an American classic. This modern workshirt-style piece is cut from a beautiful, Kakishibu-Dyed Plaid Flannel. ‘Kakishibu’ refers to a centuries-old dying process that calls on the natural pigments of unripened ‘Kaki’ fruit. It's a slow and meticulous labour of love, the fruits of which are all too evident in the autumnal, burnt-amber hues.

Studio D’Artisan Indigo-Dyed Check Flannel Shirt

Studio D'Artisan's Indigo-Dyed Check Flannel is easy on the eye as it is soft to the touch and the shirt’s reassuring heft is offset by its once-washed softness. The rope-dyed indigo of the proprietary, 100% cotton flannel will fade beautifully over time. Resin-cast buttons, dual chest pockets, and side gussets offer flourishes upon this great shirt.

Iron Heart N1 Alpaca Lined Deck Jacket - Black

As classic in its aesthetic as it is tank-like in its construction, Iron Heart’s N1 Deck Jacket makes a strong case for the last winter coat you’ll ever realistically need. The jacket is cut from a hefty, heat retaining whipcord cotton cloth, lined with soft alpaca, and fixed with a heavy-duty, two-way zip and buttoned front placket. A stone-cold heritage staple built to withstand whatever winter has to throw at you. The black is here now with the olive version on its way soon.

            All New Ultra Heavy Flannels

It simply wouldn’t be winter without a few Iron Heart’s Ultra Heavy Flannels hitting the rails at Rivet & Hide. The shirts are double brushed on the inside and single brushed on the outside and cut from a heavy, 12oz Aspero cotton fabric. The result is a series of exceptionally soft flannels with immediate character and excellent heat retention.

Available in three options. The Classic Check's mellow-red-meets-ivory pattern offers up a timelessly cool take on the western silhouette. The indigo-dyed, Buffalo Check flannel boasts a crunchy hand and plenty of fading potential. Last but not least, the Crazy Check serves up some serious winter warmth with the added bonus of an eye-popping, high-contrast, yellow check pattern. Take your pick.

Samurai Jeans at Rivet & Hide

Few brands speak to denim’s storied past and forward momentum quite like Samurai. Founded in Osaka in the late ‘90s, Samurai quickly garnered a reputation for its vintage-inspired cuts, its exceptional fabrics, and its near-obsessive pursuit of superior quality.

Over the course of its almost 25 year tenure, the brand has produced some of the most grail-worthy denim on the market. For all the history and heritage at the brand’s heels, however, it’s the road ahead that excites us the most. We’re proud to welcome Samurai’s jeans, sweaters, shirts, and tees to the rails here at Rivet & Hide.

Samurai S0255XX 15oz Ushiwaka Jeans - Slim Tapered

Anyone looking for an example of Samurai’s flair for merging superior selvedge with Sengoku-era Samurai lore need look no further. Cut to a slim tapered fit, these ‘Ushiwaka’ jeans are rife with subtle nods to the eponymous warrior (just look at the denim’s Katana-like, silver lamé selvedge ID). The super slubby, high-tension Texas cotton creates an impressive, 15oz denim with endless fading potential.

Samurai S211VX 17oz Benkei Jeans - Relaxed Tapered

Samurai's custom Benkei denim is a real wonder to behold. The one-of-a-kind, 6x5 twill weave boasts a rich, hairy texture and a substantial, crunchy hand. A relaxed tapered fit, with a generous top block and subtle, medium-to-high rise, makes for a classic cut with all the everyday versatility you could ask for in a denim.

              https://rivetandhide.com/products/samurai-s211vx-17oz-benkei-relaxed-tapered-jeans.html

Samurai S211AX 18oz AI Benkei Jeans - Relaxed Tapered

Samurai’s ‘Ai Benkei’ relaxed tapered jeans show the brand at their most obsessive. Putting the fabric front and centre, the jean’s weft is cut from a home-planted, organically-grown, and hand-harvested Japanese cotton. This is then rope-dyed with a mix of natural indigos to achieve the denim’s unique hues. A heavyweight, hand-dyed cowhide patch puts the exclamation mark on an already head turning pair of jeans.

Japanese Cotton Slub Yarn Loopwheeled Sweatshirts

Samurai’s sweaters are another well-travelled example of the brand’s ‘no compromises’ ethos. They are cut from cotton grown in Sasayama, woven in Wakayama, and dyed in Kyoto. With Union Special flat seams and a double-stitched collar, these sweatshirts are guaranteed to be as comfortable as they are hard wearing. Available in natural white and ‘Kuromame’- a charcoal-like dye derived from black beans.

Japanese Cotton Slub Yarn Loopwheeled T-Shirts

Cultivated, cut, dyed and sewn in Japan, Samurai’s Cotton Slub Yarn Tees are as homegrown as they come. The T-shirts will make several stops to some of Japan’s most esteemed workshops before they finally make it to your wardrobe. It’s a labour of love, the fruits of which are joyfully evident in these slubby, rugged, and robust tees.

Samurai Rope Dyed Indigo Heavy Flannel Shirt - Orange

This is a heavy-duty, densely textured flannel with some exceptional fading in its near future. Rope-dyed indigo offsets burnt orange to create a boldly contrasting shirt with a real autumnal charm. It’s all the proof you need that Samurai’s fabric mastery extends far beyond its denim.

              https://rivetandhide.com/products/samurai-rope-dyed-indigo-heavy-flannel-shirt-orange.html

Samurai Pure Indigo ‘Ichimatsu’ Work Shirt - Shima

Another perfect marriage of fit and fabric, Samurai’s Ichimatsu Work Shirt wears its Japanese sensibilities on its kase-dyed, broken twill woven sleeve. In true Samurai fashion, the 'Ichimatsu' checkerboard pattern offers an eye-popping ode to Japan’s Edo period. Work shirts simply have no business looking this elegant.

The Indigofera x Wes Lang 'Unbridled' Blanket

Wes Lang and Indigofera’s ‘Unbridled’ blanket is a raw, uncompromising, and inimitably cool slice of Americana artistry.

For this third collaboration between Wes Lang and Indigofera, the American artist’s original charcoal-stick-on-canvas artwork has been lovingly woven into the brand’s highly-collectible 205cm x 150cm, 100% Norwegian wool blankets. The result is a statement piece perfectly in keeping with Indigofera’s ‘prima’ philosophy.

The original Wes Lang collaboration blanket, released in 2013, adorns the wall of our London store to this day. It’s a point of great pride and hearty conversation. It stands as a celebration of the bond between brand, artist, and small business. We still get requests for it almost a decade on. It’s easy to see why: these spectacular collaborative blankets provide the perfect canvas for Wes Lang’s fevered take on the American West.

Artistry and nostalgia aside, 'Unbridled' is a solid blanket tailor-made for modern living. Use it around the campfire, snuggle under it on the couch, or hang it on your wall as we do. But whatever you do, grab one now while you still can. They are, after all, as wildly coveted as they are finely designed.

@cesco10 @LewisStonehouse Thanks for raising this and giving me the opportunity to explain.

Even before Brexit our Iron Heart margins in Euros were our worse across our entire brand range. This is because Iron Heart uses a USD as a base rate and their Euro price is determined by that. Our base currency is GBP (much weakened since the 2016 Brexit referendum). However, until the end of last year we still matched Iron Heart UK's Euro prices and absorbed those lower margins.

Since Brexit we pay the duty and VAT on behalf of the customer just as Iron Heart does.
The cost of doing this is significantly higher than how it worked before we left the EU.

Using a UHF as an example - the Euro retail price of 325 would have accrued before Brexit 20% UK VAT - €54.16. With Brexit now a hard reality we have to pay 12% duty when we ship to the EU, higher shipping costs, and then VAT is added to not only the duty but the shipping cost as well. Broken down it looks like this:

                              Sale price €325
                              Duty €39.00
                              Shipping €25

Total value at this stage = €389

Let's say the customer is in Sweden where there is 25% VAT that now comes to €97.25

So when we ship duties and taxes paid we pay €136.25 in duty and in fact the shipping fee is €30 because DHL like UPS charges us to process the duties and taxes payments to each EU government.

So on a UHF sale at €325 we now pay €166.25. On top of that we have to pay the wholesale price of the UHF to Iron Heart. If that item comes back for a refund we cannot claim back those duties and taxes paid. We are suddenly in serious loss on that shirt.

You may ask, therefore, how does Iron Heart UK manage to keep its Euro price lower than ours?
Three key points (I hope Giles, Paula and Alex do not mind me being so frank and open here) - Firstly, as a distributor of the brand they have slightly better margins than as a retailer like us. Secondly, we operate our online store from our 2 bricks and mortar stores in London and Manchester. The overheads are much higher than being online only. Finally, the margins for Iron Heart UK on EU sales have also been reduced significantly but as a distributor they feel duty bound to maintain volumes and not reduce their orders with Haraki. That would have wider consequences for the brand itself.

I've been very open and vocal against leaving the EU Single Market and Customs Union. It is having a terrible impact on small businesses in the UK. Yesterday I was interviewed by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation about this very issue for a documentary to be shown in January marking the first anniversary of living with Brexit. The interviewer asked me why I still sell into the EU given all these costs and all the extra red-tape that it involves. My reply was the our EU customers have played a big role in the success of Rivet & Hide. Your support was a significant factor in our ability to open a bricks and mortar store in London and Manchester. I am not going to close the door to our EU customers and let Boris Johnson and the Brexit Taliban win completely. We are doing our best to keep our EU market alive but the truth of the matter is that it is costing us all a lot more. That's Brexit in a nutshell.

Footnote: if any forum member living in the EU wishes to buy from us and take care of the duties/taxes themselves we can offer you a significant discount. Just contact us via email.

Oh, and thanks for the considered reply, and we don't mind at "frank and open"…

Just to expand on one of Danny's points.  We (IHUK) make virtually no margin on our EU business (and Haraki knowing this, gives us a rebate on all direct business into The EU).

So why do we and Haraki continue bothering to sell into The EU? As Danny pointed out, losing EU volume would have a significant detrimental impact on the volumes of orders we place on Haraki, which in turn would mean that he would place smaller orders with the workshops and factories.  At the margin, that might mean that some of them close, the, as a brand, we are in deep shit.....
