Thank you all!! God bless…
I would be lying if I didn't say I was just a little upset, but you have to take life one day at a time. The shitty part is that she is about 600 miles away and across a border that has been closed for almost a year. It would be suicide for me to go right now as their Covid numbers are worse than ours. With my wife and two kids, I have to keep thinking about the big picture as much as it sucks!!!
I miss the innocence of youth...

Alexa and Echo collect your algorithm data for Amazon, websites track your purchasing and viewing habits, and Google openly track your movements and plot activity of your area's movements. When did you consent to this? This is why I am getting a dumb phone and spend less and less time online. I am happier for it, my time has become my own again.

I'm guessing our consent lies in the massive Terms of Services tabs that google downplays to the bottom right of the screen but it's a definite abuse of power and information. Social media platforms are even worse and have been selling our information for years….influencing buying, communication, and our time spent online. I deleted my FB years ago and just casually surf IG but I'm about this close to deleting that too. We do have Alexas in our house that we use mostly just for music but I'm not really pleased about them either. Occasionally an Alexa will spin blue like it's listening when no one says a wake up command. Somewhat disconcerting IMO.
Not to hijack this thread but does anyone make a dumb phone with an iPhone or otherwise quality camera?
To put this thread back on track, I wanted to say I appreciate all the leadership and forumites here and to say thank you for giving me a much better perspective during this pandemic! Much love from St Louis

This is the only site that I have an account on, I do have a Discogs account, and dormant ebay account. I have zero social media accounts. I still buy print magazines and books, but no books since shops closed.
It worries me massively (and this is a general point, not a direct response to @giles) that we are running toward a society/world where we voluntarily give our most base date away to be monitored and used (what's your heart rate, bmi, blood sugar level? What does that tell perspective employers, insurance companies ect?).
Our algorithms have been bought and sold for over a decade. Now though research is being undertaken into mood modification. Amazon and Google contribute to it but the biggest players are tech companies most bods don't know exist.
Aexa and Echo data monitors what music you request to make you feel a certain way..
Feeling low? Play something happy (very base level psychology that doesn't stand up to scrutiny). That same data could be used to modify your suggestions and playlist (even 'shuffle' is tampered with) to change how you feel.If you are someone that thinks 'Well I'm not doing anything wrong so why should I care'? ', I'd say' there are lots of persecuted groups in history that once though that'.
We really need to think more about what we take for granted.

Thank you good sir. Sausage fingers, mobile phone, and tired brain = misposting.

The second you click "I accept" in any terms and conditions, you are giving up something you have taken for granted and giving it away for free.

I use the home page and search engine https://www.ecosia.org/ it is an ethical browser that does not share search info with 3rd parties. I never get any spam emails, or emails trying to sell me crap. Damn sight better than Google imo

Alexa and Echo collect your algorithm data for Amazon
Please share your sources where the data is used for anything other than improving the natural language processing of the voice language neural understanding, based on device-enabled keywords (Alexa, Computer, etc) to trigger the service. The technology does nothing other than listen for specific trigger words. Amazon would be sunk in seconds if they overstepped this trust boundary. Don't want to say tin foil hat here, but there's no data to support that which I've ever read, in all the tear downs/reverse engineering/network monitoring etc etc.
Anesthetist, mine do it too from time to time. Log into the Alexa app and you can see what triggered it. There's always something. So far everytime I've been like oookkkayyy I guess that's kind of close. Technology is still very young/needs work. It's not spying, it's just dumb software :D.

Not being tracked, profiled, targeted etc is difficult to avoid completely; in fact it takes quite a bit of research and being pretty tech / IT savvy to reduce it to a minimum level, bit of an arms race really and the little man is at a disadvantage arguably.
