Something else has been having a go at this one….

@Giles there are days when we are lucky to catch a pike at all, and days where we get annoyed because we catch so many when we are searching for largemouth bass. The little ones like that also attack from the side a lot and bite through my line, taking expensive lures with it. Annoying little swimmers those pike

I'm still working out how to fish the moat.  It is fairly shallow ith a lot of weed.  A Mepps seems to swim at about the right depth not to keep collecting weed, but A Mepps is a small lure, so it is attracting small fish, I need to find a big lure that works well given the parameters I have to work with….

Normally set them up like this with a slow to medium retrieve.  Just quick enough to get a good wobble in the blade.  Occasionally a faster retrieve, with a pause so the blade floats down and then repeat.

It works well in the weeds around here.

I use these worms in heavy weeds. The ones that have the hook guards. They can be finicky, but you can fish them slow and pull them through most vegetation. I do recommend a swivel when you fish it as it spins when reeling through open water.

Nice fish and great lure choices. That first one is a scatter bait I believe. Made to move erratically during retrieve so to the large bowl shaped tongue and the second has that indentation and small bill. Streamlined through the water and leaves a trail of bubbles behind. Are either bait suspending? Often times with northern they hit on the stop/go speed change retrieve.

They are both floaters.  The first one makes a load of commotion on the surface and does a fast zigzag on the retrieve, on the pause, it hangs vertically.  The second one swims with a tight rolling motion at a depth of about 6-9", on the retrieve, and bubbles up on the pause.

I should say the second one swam, as I left it in a bush on the far bank.  😢 😢 😢
