My girlfriend's glasses were eight years old, and the prescription has drifted off. We popped into an optician's to get her eyes tested, and she ended up with a pair of Dita's.

I'm not sure why she's looking so grumpy there, as I paid for them! 😃

i've gone through some of the back pages and saw jacques marie mage being mention. i'm wondering who has any, if so what (optical or sunnies) and care to share their opinion. looking to replace my max pittion which broke.

i've gone down to a store and seen a few models. they look pretty well built and really keen on pulling the trigger but i'd love to hear some thoughts first. also, if there's any other worthy brands, please mention..

I have two pairs of JMM from both their Made In Japan Heritage collection as well as their Made In Japan Optical - the Apache in Carbon and the Wyatt in Allan. Both have unbelievable construction and attention to detail, from the epoxy tipped arms to the acetate lining of the lenses.

To be completely honest with you, I don’t see myself buying any other brand. The proportions of everything I’ve tried on from them are perfect for my face/head size and the materials are top notch. I suggest if you can, looking at their Heritage collection as well as their standard Optical line.

@louisbosco, Henderson's Opticians in Melbourne have recently started stocking JMM. I'll point them out next time you're over.

I don't have a pair, but I'd agree with @bxh that they're well made. The metal frames, which I was looking at, feel a bit chunkier than some of the other makes. They maybe come up a bit larger than some of the Japanese brands, so it'll be a case of seeing what fits you.

I do like them, and I am tempted by a pair.

thanks! i'm not sure what range/collection i'm looking at. but i believe there's 2 models which i'm keen on, which are the jax and something else. (i forgot the name to the other pair) i'm quite conservative with frame designs so what i'm looking for is something close to like a wayfarer type. i believe the ones i looked at are both acetate models.

@Graeme unfortunately i'm not looking at their metal collection, although there's one which i'd fancy but i don't think suits me. there's a couple of stores here in perth too. although, i'm not really sure if it's more expensive in perth..

Thanks @steelworker. She's quite photogenic, which helps. 🙂

@louisbosco there were some acetate frames, but I think that there were more metal ones. I'll check next time I'm in town.

The Jacques Marie Mage rep was in Melbourne this morning, and I got to try a few pairs on. By a few, I mean all the glasses in the world!

This is a new style, the Ascarii. They also resemble Carl Fredricksen's spectacles in Up…

The Quattro is a cool style, though they're sold as sunglasses. This is a pair with the lenses pushed out.

I like this style, the Ringo, unfortunately the orange version is (mostly) sold out. However, an optician's in Manchester has a pair in stock…

The orange ones are definitely better.  Much more you.

They're good, but the only two pairs I've found are rather expensive. 😞

                              @Chris:

So my venerable Ray Bans died today after 12 years of distinguished service.  Now I'm searching for replacements.  I am not excited about the search, which is made harder by the fact that I have the same size head as an average 10 year old.

Still looking? I may be able to help! I have a similar problem, and I found some great frames. I just started wearing glasses last year when my vision decided to take a giant shit.

I already purchased some, but I'm curious about your suggestions, @seawolf.  I don't love mine, so I'm open to alternatives.

On a side note, we were traveling last week and I ended up buying a cheapo pair to keep from going snowblind.  While shopping, my wife keep handing me pairs from the children's section.  An embarrassing number fit pretty well.

@Chris , you definitely need to check out https://davidkind.com

They have frames for smaller faces, and will help pick pairs that look best on you. You pick 3, and their stylist picks 3 for home try-on, and they get mailed to you. I ended up not liking the ones I picked out, and bought two that the stylist picked out. Great customer service, high quality frames and lenses. They even did two doctor remakes for me because my prescription is so whacky that it took several tries to get it right. Highly recommended.

I dropped by an opticians in Melbourne this afternoon, as my girlfriend wanted to get her contact lenses checked out, and they had a rep in from Mr Leight. They're a high-end brand by the people behind Garrett Leight.

The frames I tried on were Japanese made, and reminded me a bit of some of the Jacques Marie Mage styles, but with thinner wire. The price point is around $1000 in Australia, about $700 US.

I was in Melbourne at the weekend, and the optician had a few new pairs by Kuboraum in stock.

These silver ones are quite good.

But I was joking that I'd get this black and gold pair with transition lenses that turned black and mirrored gold. The optician thought that was a good idea…
