@Steffen I don't mind waiting lists, but the problem is that the allocation process is arbitrary. A big spender will get first pick, a first time customer won't even be allowed to submit an expression of interest.

If it was a strict queue, so you put down a deposit and waited, it'd be a lot easier.

My suspicion is that a lot of desirable pieces end up on the secondary market, and that's where some of the shortage is coming from. There are typically 300 unworn Daytonas on Chrono24 at inflated prices. That could easily be a big chunk of the annual production.

@louisbosco Rolex do a roadshow at their dealers, where you can see all the watches. It's in Melbourne in a fortnight, and will probably make it to Perth soon. That'll be your best opportunity to see one. Otherwise you might get lucky with a dealer having it in stock.

I'd call around your local Rolex dealers, and see if any are getting it. I stumbled across it two years ago, but didn't know it was a thing until recently.

There's an interesting piece on Hodinkee about Sir Robin Knox-Johnston's Rolex Explorer. He wore it on the first, non-stop, solo circumnavigation in 1969. I believe that he's also friends with @Giles. 🙂

The first solo circumnavigation was done by Sir Francis Chichester, and Hodinkee also have an article on his Oyster Perpetual. He made a stop in Australia, whereas RKJ did it non-stop.

Spotted today, the TAG Heuer Carrera 02T "Tête de Vipère", which is certified as a chronometer by the Observatoire de Besançon.

It's actually a bit more blue in the flesh ceramic than it appears in photos.

Omega have just announced the First Wrist-Chronograph reissue.

It's based around an original movement, which has been restored and upgraded by the watchmakers in Omega's Atelier Tourbillon.

They've only produced eighteen, at a price of 120,000 CHF. They'll still be easier to get than a stainless Daytona at retail.

Thanks @Seul, @rocket, and @neph93. I can't afford a lot of the watches I post either, and I dread to think how much RKJ's Explorer would go for at auction. :o

                          @Chris, it's true. All of it. 😃

I spoke to one of the guys at a local watch shop today, and he said that Rolex have pretty much given up on shipping stainless steel sports watches. For all this talk of the company being staffed by marketing geniuses, I'm pretty sure it's not a clever business plan to not actually sell any product.

Ellen DeGeneres did an Episode of Seinfelds Comedians in Cars where she had a Newman Daytona on her Wrist. I knew from watching her Show from Time to Time that she has a huge Watch Collection, lots of Modern Rolex Watches, Patek Nautilus, AP Royal Oak and so on but the Newman is nothing you see everday, 250.000 Dollar Pricetag and probably the hyped Rolex at the Moment, cool Piece. That said Seinfeld told one Episode before that he met Newman and went carting with him once  😃

Omega and Fratello have announced the Speedy Tuesday 2, which has an Ultraman thing going on.

It also comes in a really cool box.

More details at Fratello and Omega. But the limited edition of 2012 has already sold out.

It's a nice looking watch, I like the orange accents a lot.  A bit steep in pricing for my wallet, though.

And didn't Speedy Tuesday have some embarrassing problems the first go round?

On Omega salesman was telling me that any Speedmaster limited edition gets hoovered up in a matter of hours or days by collectors. They seem to sell on at a premium too, last year's Speedy Tuesday sold for $6,500 and is now trading for between $8,000 and $10,000 on Chrono24.

So you can't complain about the company following the strategy. 🙂

The watch isn't bad, maybe a bit gimmicky, but I'd go for the Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 instead.

And I still like the box.

Omega has a vested interest in claiming that their limited editions are a good investment. Personally I find it difficult to believe, especially over the long term and the whole range. With this said, I like this watch (orange is cool).

Rolex is pulling the same trick, claiming that its bread and butter models are rare and good investments, despite selling anywhere up to a million watches per year.

Comparing the Australian RRP for the Air King, which is an unloved model that can be found fairly easily in dealers, with what's listed on Chrono24, and there are about a dozen selling at a discount. Most are being offered at a premium.

That said, I'd expect the Ultraman Speedy to be a better investment than an Air King.
