^^Fair point.  A good gait analysis should be on a treadmill, with cameras to see both side and straight on views.  They'll record you running for a few minutes, then replay the video while explaining how you run and what type of shoe you need as a result.  If they don't do that, go somewhere that will.

Thanks for all the help guys, one of my friends gave me some recommendations for some local spots to check out so I'm planning on doing that tomorrow.
Not sure if I really need the gait analysis as I'm not that into this whole thing yet, but I'm going to go see what's available out there.
I just know the NBs I've been running in are not really meant to be running shoes, so need something a bit more fitting.

@Broark if you’re planning on buying new shoes anyway, you may as well have the gait analysis to ensure you buy the right pair for you. The analysis should be free (and as described by Chris above) and should result in a recommendation of the type of shoe you require with some examples sold by the store, in a range of prices.

I had my gait analysed in a U.K. store (Runners Need) some years ago and bought the recommended shoes for my neutral running style - New Balance 1080, which fortunately are available in a 2E width. I’m now on my third pair (with another squirrelled away) and can’t see any reason to change.

Thanks @Maynard Friedman , sounds like the gait analysis might be worthwhile if I am planning on buying anyways.
We have a really big running community in Austin so there seem to be a few good shops worth checking out.
Hopefully today I'll find something that I want to buy.

Broke my marathon PR by a slight bit this weekend with a 2:38. Cutting back for a couple weeks, then it's time for some big training for Berlin in September! Also, joined the Strava group! Nice to see that Hard as Duck logo, as I'll have the shirt waiting for me at home tonight. 🙂

It’s funny, late last year I was talking to one of my trail running friends, and he was thinking about signing up for a road marathon this year. Fast forward to this year- he decided that would be too hard and instead signed up for the Utah ultra endurance 240 miler.

A word of warning when going to a store for a gate analysis. I went to a store in Bath for a gate analysis and was asked to run up & down an alley in my jeans and a pair of trainers from the store.

@den1mhead have you had any better experiences in Bristol or Bath for shoes?  I have an old pair of Mizuno’s with a really high drop and I’m looking to get a new paid with a mid drop.  I’d like to go somewhere I can get some decent advice if poss.

                          Cheers!

@Tidal there are 2 Runners Need stores in Bristol according to their website. I've been to a few in London (including Kings Cross near my office) and can recommend them.

Just Run in Bath offers a full gait analysis service. I would always check who is the gait analysis specialist in store and see that individual [emoji106]

Hah. That sounds ridiculous. I think I'm going to jump into a fast/flat 50 mile race late this Fall, but nothing beyond that in the foreseeable future. My philosophy with racing these days is that if I end up walking because something is a super steep uphill on a trail (like 20+% grade) and it's more efficient to just walk, that's fine, but if I have to walk solely because the distance is so long, then I'm not ready to race that distance. I can't even imagine being out in a single stage race for several days at a time.  😃

I have a fairly similar philosophy; if the reason for me essentially falling apart in a race is purely due to being on my feet for a ridiculously long time then its not my cup of tea.  Ultras are nuts.  It doesn't matter what effort you put in during the race, eventually you will fall apart because you have been on your feet for an obscene amount of time.

I'm not as active on here as I used to be, mostly because I dropped 40 lbs, so a lot of my IH gear is way too big.

I did my last longest training run last week, ending with 42 miles and 12k vert, with about 20 miles above treeline (around 11000 ft here) and off trail. Phew!

Nice. I think your page is private, btw, so I can't these fun outings. I mostly run roads these days, but my Monday run – 13 and change miles with 4000'+ vert, topping out at almost 10400' -- was pretty spectacular. Gotta get in at least a few more like that this summer.
