I've noticed that they grab and hold dirt very well… After 2-3yrs wears at a desk job, I usually wash, because the grunge starts to become visible.

Wash when visibly dirty or smells is a solid approach for clothing, except for underthings and socks. Some of the suits I wear daily have never been washed/drycleaned. Worsted wool does not require much more than an occasional, vigorous brushing.
