Speaking of perfection[emoji23] These 2 are the last ones standing. I have decided less is more. They are the best I have ever handled. Jerry Halfrich and Tom Ploppert make flawless traditional patterns.

It is the most epic piece I have ever handled and I just heard back from Jerry regarding the history of the knife. He said it is was a special order from a customer and it is a one off “one of a kind”

I’m thinking about getting Drew to make us a custom chef’s knife. He’s been a chef in SF for the past 20 years and then pursued his passion of knife making. I’m really into the craftsman and attention to detail. He’s been working some serious Damascus and triple layer. I just love the look and design of his kitchen knives. Super functional and stunning.

I love knives (kitchen) and have bloody loads of them, including some lovely Japanese Damascus blades, but my culinary hero, Anthony Bourdain, says you only need 1 (well 2 if you need a serrated one)…...Must try harder....

I'm looking for a good 10" chef's knife. I actually met Bob Kramer a few times (he used to live in Seattle, maybe still does), but his knives are now unobtainium…

They are indeed. Did you see the pic where the knife is disassembled? The guy is a mad genius.

Don Fogg is my favorite maker and I am lucky to have a number of his pieces. He is retired. He posts on Facebook from time to time. He appears to be well. I haven't spoken with him recently.

I use mostly a Kramer-designed (but not custom) knife in 52100 carbon steel. I'd like a custom though. There is a guy close to me who makes beautiful pieces but they're beyond my price range for a user knife. Check him out: https://www.maumasifirearts.com

About ten years ago I was at Blade show, and it came up in the conversation a lot of the heat and beat guys were having a lot of health issues. Don was someone that came up. Glad to hear he's still kicking.

As much as I like nice things (I have two giraffe bone handled long knives/short swords from Jerry Hossom), I have a hard time justifying a high end kitchen knife. My kitchen knives get put away wet, tossed in the steel sink, banged against stuff, dropped on the floor (it's amazing I still have all my toes), and used to pry.

I don't even mind damaging the knife, it's just such a pain in the ass to get a custom piece repaired when you break a tip off.

I have no problem justifying a high end kitchen knife … up to a point. As much as I love damascus, I don't see the point on a kitchen knife which will stain in a few days.

Bladesmithing is hard on the body for sure.
