I prefer the BMW M2 to the M5. But if I was after something vaguely in the realms of possibility, I'd go for one of the new Renault Alpines. Ideally the rumoured Renaultsport model that's due later next year.

I get a rental car every week from Hertz (UK based but commute to Germany every week) and my upgrades are usually mid-sized BMW/Mercedes, but this week they surprised me!

Ok, so this is the second time Ive asked, and dont think this answer will be much different than the first, but here it goes.

Ok, so I have this vision for my life, and it includes a 1930s cottage by the water and an old 4x4 in the driveway. Well, an old 4x4 and an early 80s 911, but my likelihood of the 4x4 occurring first is pretty good lol.

While the obvious answer is a J80 or J100 Land Cruiser/LX, I am enthralled by the idea of finding an Old Range Rover and giving it the life it deserves, not being repo'd 1,000 times at Buy Here Pay Here lots haha.

Anyone have an older Range Rover (not Defender, Not Disco, Not RR Sport) that has managed to keep it on the road for this long?

I'm sure there are plenty of English guys who have managed to keep them driving to this day, but I am thinking a Pre-BMW era RR (2nd gen) with the possibility of maybe venturing into 3rd Gen with the basic E39 BMW electronics as opposed to the supped up Jag system from 2005+.

Anyways, while I know 100 people will attempt to talk me out of this terrible money pit of an idea, it will only take one success story to convince me to follow my path lol

@Appfaff Don't overlook old American 4x4's.  International Scouts 800's can be had for reasonable prices and they're built like tanks (well, tanks with intermittent rust issues  :-[).  Broncos are always a great choice although they've shot up in value over the last decade.  C10 Blazers are also amazing but getting harder and harder to find ones that haven't been modified to hell and back.  Just my 2 cents…

That's a great restoration job for sure!  Might have to scour the net to see what's out there… my RR search has not been too successful lol

I've always had a soft spot for old Scouts. My grandfather actually taught me how to drive his 1969 model.  It was avocado green with a white top running a 304 cubic inch V8 with a 3 speed manual transmission and it lacked both power steering and brakes.  It looked a lot like the one in the foreground:

Super cool!  I never see scouts around here in Alabama, but I did watch a video of one of the jalop guys who bought one and was fixing it up.

When I was in DFW this spring, it seemed a lot of the guys my age were trading in their kick ups for 10-20 year old LCs and LRs.  The pricing in Texas reflects such - hoping I can snag something over here before the prices increase in my neck of the woods!

Land Rover announced the Range Rover Reborn programme earlier this year, where you get an as-new three door model.

                                            Unfortunately it'll cost you £135,000, about $200K. :o
