There's an interesting piece at Revolution on the Best of Basel 2016. (H/T to @Tempvs for the article.)

The journalist, Geo Cramer, reckons that most of the brands are missing the point: Watches need to be cooler to appeal to a wider audience than collectors, and need to be cheaper because the Chinese aren't spending so much.

            I agree with him.

Some of his picks are interesting. Sure, he includes Rolex, Tudor and Patek, but also talks about Tag Heuer's new Connected watch and tourbillion. The former is so successful that it still hasn't been launched here in Oz due to supply constraints.

Cramer is also a big fan of Hublot, and includes the Meca 10 in his list. I saw a hands on at aBlogToWatch, and thought it was a cool piece. But reading the comments it sounds as though watch nerds are comparing it unfavourably to other, more prestigious maisons. I think that they're missing Cramer's point.

Thanks! I still can't believe that I was able to get it for what I did with the original box and papers. I've got 2 Schofield straps coming as the original is way too short for me to wear comfortably.

I spoke to Giles (Schofield) at SalonQP a few years back. He spotted my wabash shirt, and seemed into his workwear.

went into the rolex store today to ask about a GMT Master 2 (and just try one on). The wait time for all models? 12 months! And they get 1 in stock each month. The first person to pay gets it. They give you 10 minutes from time of call to pay before calling the next in line. Ruthless!

More like ridiculous! I had a twotone and flipped it. Nice watch but nothing special, especially for that kind of commotion.

Rolex produce on the order of a million watches a year. So why are some pieces so unobtainable?
