    Hi all

    My first post here …

I hate wearing shorts in the summer (trust me, beyond a certain age - and I'm way beyond it, wherever it is -  it's a bad look...) so I've been looking for some decent straight leg selvedge five pocket jeans with a high rise (ideally 13") in a lightweight (say 10-11oz) fabric. I wear 13.5oz denim most of the year round but find it too hot in the summer. I'm looking for a real old school cut. Any ideas gratefully received ...

    many thanks

    Bill

From experience, weave is more important than weight. I'm sweated my balls off is tightly woven 13oz (almost literally), and been summer fresh in IH's own 25oz.

Made in England, clothed in Japan, fed in America and drunk in Belgium !

I have worn Sugarcane Okinawas in the heat and found them very comfortable. The cut is very 1940s and the denim is really slubby and beautiful. Last summer I wore my Fullcount 1101s almost exclusively and didn't have any issues.

Welcome @Bill C.  There are a number of good options.  I know Left Field makes a very light (9 oz.?) denim.  But taking into consideration the rise you want another option you might check out is WH Ranch Dungarees.  He veers toward the higher rise, traditional cut jean and currently carries a few lighter weight denims.  Full disclosure, this is a one man brand and you can expect to wait a good amount of time before your jeans are finished (potentially 6+ months).

Another option is Companion Denim.  Iu does custom jeans as well so you can have exactly what you want made.  He also has a number denim lots to choose from so I'm sure he'd have something that would fall in line with what you are looking for.  The pair Iu made me only took about 4 weeks start to finish and they are incredible jeans.

Companion is without a doubt my top recommendation.  If you don't need the jeans in the very near future (can wait until June/July) I'd also check out WH Ranch Dungarees.

13oz Cone Mills Left Field Greasers are my go-to summer jeans when I travel to construction sites in Southern California.  It's mostly because I don't mind washing them each trip, when I do sweat my balls off in 100*F weather.  😠 😉

In all seriousness, IH's 21oz denim breathes better than most of my lighter-weight denim.  I think the key is getting a looser fit.  I know N&F made a lightweight denim, too, but their cuts blow.

WH 800 have a pretty classic 1947 inspired cut and a fairly soft & breathy 14 oz denim. Besides, the fading potential is awesome.
On my part, I think weight is an important part. Of course the weave and stiffness plays a part, but I don't feel comfortable in long pants at all if it's hot, so I try to avoid the heavy materials even at mopderate warm days.

Mister Freedom do a few pairs in lightweight denim. They tend to be more inspired by military uniforms than the traditional five pocket jeans, so might not be what you're looking for.

I'm currently wearing a pair of the Top Siders MN, which are in a 9.4 oz (raw) denim. There's also the Continental Trousers, Olive Garrison Pants, and Utility Pants, all of which come in 10 to 11 oz .

Edwin, Lee, Nudie, Levis, Pike Brothers, … there's enough stuff on the market, which is more at the 'lighter side of denim'.

but I prefer 14 oz. upward - summer, winter .. that doesn't matter

Look at most of the LVC models. All up to (and including) the 1922 will be made from 9oz denim and will be varying degrees of 'loose' with a high rise. The models from 1927-37 are similar but use a 10oz denim. 1944 onwards will use 12oz denim and if you're looking for a higher rise, I'd suggest the 44, 55 and 66 models.

You may want to have a look at Ande Whall's SR14 Buffalo cut.
I have a pair of the SR11 & SR12 in the Caribou cut, nice lighter weight denims.

Edit: Apologies, these are not in the 10oz-11oz range you're looking for.

As I recall Oni does a decent straight leg in a 14oz denim.  As another forum member said, the weave tends to be more important than the weight.  Oni's loose weave is great flr summer.  The PBJ-x005 would also be a good similar option.  Check out denimio.com as I think the have both.

Would you say the 14 oz breathes better than the 21 oz?

Actually about the same.  It is a tighter weave….

sorry if this is a stupid (newbie) question, but is the IH-777S-14 in Giles' picture the same cut as the IH-777S-21?

                                          @Giles:

For a "traditional cut" there is nothing better on the market (that I have found) than the IH1955s. If they could be made with the IH 14 ozs denim, then the OPs wish and my own would be met. 😎

Other than custom made jeans there are few options in HIGH rise denim. But the components are right here in the IH universe to make the very best. I am hopeful.
