Here's another interview with William Gibson, this time on watches.

He's also got a Jaeger LeCoultre Mark XI. That's probably my favourite vintage watch, and I've been keeping an eye open for one for a while. They're a bit rare…

So far I'am very pleased but the fit - this is just ok.. I might get the bracelet shortened by one link and also have one half link put in for a better fit. We'll see if this improves the fit.

@SimonQ. Great modern Rolex ! I like the slimmed down lugs compared to the Maxi case.

Been looking for a modern Rolex myself as a day to day wear.  I tried the 114060 Non date Sub-C and the 116600 SD4C, both lovely but I found the SubC more comfortable.  I am sure I would be very happy with either model.

If I picked up an 114060 I have found a competent person willing to put a bevel on the Maxi case lugs. I thought this mod may make the transition from the Maxi case lug into the bracelet look a bit more streamlined.

The LV Ceramic Hulk sub is also an interesting watch, the pictures don't do it justice, much better in real life than in pictures. The sunburst green dial is either very green in direct light or close to black in muted lighting. Too many good options!

@ddtrash mate. i honestly wouldn't mod or f**k around with a rolex. it'll just affect it's value. that being said. you've got quite a few good choices there. my personal fav would be the lv ceramic hulk. though given that over the 16610lv kermit. kermit wins.

@ddtrash I'd go for the Hulk because it's green. No other reason. 🙂

Personally I prefer @SimonQ.'s Sea Dweller better than the Submariner.

Or, for another alternative, the Tudor Pelagos with the in house movement. Unlike the Rolex, the case is titanium, which makes it lighter. And it even comes in blue.

@louisbosco Appreciate your comments regarding modifying the case on the Non Date SubC.

If I were to pick up a Non Date SubC I would wear it for a while before making any decision to get a bevel put onto the lugs.

I wonder what the next generation of Sub cases will look like? The square shouldered lug on the current Maxi case has had a lot of critics. I wonder if this is the reason the new SD4K 116600 has gone back to a more tapered look?

I am not a massive fan of the cyclops therefore the Non Date SubC or SD4K would be better choices for me.

On paper the SD4K looks to be the winner, rarer than a sub, matt dial, non cyclops, raised crystal, slimmer lugs etc.  I do really like the SD4K but when viewed next to the SubC it was obvious that the SubC was a better fit on my wrist, it fitted round the wrist rather than on top of the wrist if that makes sense. The larger caseback on the SD4K makes the watch stand on top of the wrist more than the SubC.

The solution is to buy both and see which one gets most wrist time and flip the looser for a Milgauss GV!

Should this discussion be in the 'Watch Thread' or the 'First World Problems Thread' ?

Sorry to say but I'd never customize a Rolex since you'd ruin any resale. However if you're keeping it for life, go nuts 🙂

I've heard that Rolex can be a bit awkward with modified watches, in that they won't service them, and you'd void the warranty.

Personally, I'd go for the Milgauss over the Sub or Sea Dweller.

With regard to modified Rolex watches, the official service centres remove the modified components and put the watch back to factory spec.  The non standard parts are not given back to the customer and you also get charged for the OEM components that were used.

Some interesting stories about people putting sparkly diamond dials onto their Rolexes for the Service centre to remove them and presumably bin them.

If I were to get the lugs on a maxi case bevelled then it would not go back to Rolex for a service. I would use an independent to service the watch.
