After all the research and deliberation, I went with the Goruck GR1

I'm a sucker for accessories, so once I'd added a few choice extras to my basket the price started to climb and then I realised that it was cheaper to
buy the bundled GR1 Rucking Kit [emoji3]Having saved some money there I felt I could justify a few other bits, all of which pushed the total high enough that I qualified for free international shipping [emoji106]

              Your turn, again. 😉

Topo Designs have just unveiled the Flap Pack, which might work for you. It's about the right size, and Cordura with a tarp lining, so it should be waterproof. No padded laptop compartment, unfortunately.

Topo has a store near my favorite um coffee shop, I'll swing by and post some temptations as soon as I can. Baby needs a purse and I suspect they'd have those too.

The Washington Post is reporting on the developing IATA Carry OK standard, which is slightly smaller than the current regulations. This graphic shows the new size.

As far as I can gather, the initiative is going to:

                          • Ensure that everyone's bags will fit on a plane.

                          • End confusion between airlines imposing different size limits.

                          • Force everyone to get a new bag. 🙂

The Defy Verbockel is pretty much a perfect size for the new regime. Some of the Tom Bihn bags, in particular the Tri-Star and Aeronaut 30 also work.

@Giles you might want to take a look at the sizes with regards to the upcoming IH bags.

IATA represent something like 85% of airlines, so it's got a pretty good chance of becoming a standard. Particularly as there's been a trend of downsizing what bags you can carry on. This would just accelerate the trend a few steps.

I wonder if it will change things with the regional Australian carriers. They use the 105 cm standard, which is 50 x 35 x 20 cm. It would certainly make it easier to find a travel bag to go everywhere.

I don't think I've ever seen a bag be measured. On my last flight a bag didn't fit into the overhead bins, and the hostee actually climbed onto the seat to help the passenger stuff his bag in (she pushed down the external pockets). Nothing works unless it's enforced globally, and good luck with that.

I've been coveting the Barnstormers Rigging Co.'s "Swatter" duffel bag for well over a year now and finally managed to grab one.

The "swatter" comes into two color versions. A navy with dark leather and an olive drab with a lighter tannish red leather. Those two colors come in a no-stencil and a "San Fransisco Seals" stenciled version. I grabbed the stenciled olive drab version. Not usually a fan of stencils, but these stencils just seem to work perfectly with this bag IMO, both becasue it's a throwback to the types of bags that major and minor league ball players would have lugged around back when they were riding buses all over the country and because "seals" seems to work with the military aesthetic of the olive drab.

Here are some not so great pics of the bag filled with every single item from my bottoms drawer (i.e. all my pants, shorts, swimming suits and pajama bottoms–minus the one pair I'm wearing, but those would fit too).

The swatter has no external pockets but does have two internal pouches (pics from BRYWB).

Here's a pic of the bag in action (also stolen from BRYWB)

The simplicity of this bag is what drew me in, but also the cause of a long hesitation. The lack of an over the other shoulder messenger style strap, shorter hand straps, external pockets etc makes for a very pared down, no frills look that I like. But also leaves the bag missing quite a few functions. What tipped the scales for me was realization that I prefer tote bag style near shoulder straps over messenger style straps or even backpacks for travel.

                                      More pics here:

The Bedouin Ottoman is a bigger version of the Delireis. If I can get hold of one then it might be the best choice. Lantiki have it in stock.

@Graeme, I'm going way back here but did you pick up an Bedouin Ottoman?
