I was inches, inches away I tell you from pulling the trigger on the Vandal. Then I realized I'd be cycling 2x a week like this, likely in the rain, exposing the main section to the rain, which isn't really up for it without it's protective sheath :|.

Hahahah, I think I'm going to shut up for a while (months) about it again. Pretty much so given up for now, so no more whinging about something not quite perfect.

If I could avoid the rain, I would. However, I don't have the ability to accurately predict the weather with enough certainty, and a 4k laptop is a lot to blow due to being mistakenly caught in the rain. I cycle to work when it's likely I won't get wet. I probably still get rained on around 7% of the year.

Not stylish, but Arc'Teryx makes bags and bag sleeves. The latter will work with other bags and compress down small. On the order of $30.

Arc'Teryx Veilance otoh makes bags that look cool and are cool.

That being said, I'm not sure if it's the aesthetic you're looking for

Oh, I forgot to mention: I used to carry this every day for three years. Very waterproof

Thanks Doug, going to keep quiet, per above. (When it rains and I'm cycling, I don't keep dry, I get soaked).

Maybe @Snowy should get one of these to protect his laptop? 😉

The review of the Rambler that I saw said it had three compartments, all of which are waterproof. The laptop could always go in the front pocket, which would be covered by a flap and possibly a zip.

Alternatively go for one of the bigger bags like the Fitzroy, which always has a flap over the main compartment.

The R6 or R8 are both available in 40 litre capacities. If you put the laptop in the external, padded sleeve that plugs onto the pack then it should be pretty well protected.

I don't understand. You could get any backpack, strap one of those waterproof covers on it and keep your laptop in a waterproof sleeve. Get the Mission Workshop bag!

                                1)waterproof, lined and zippers
2)big enough to carry tons (42L)
3)"laptop" area not near the front, and partitioned. Bottom of bag 'padded' in 1860D

Not a compromise in sight here.

Sounds like you went shopping at Rushfaster…

I'm leaning towards a Defy Verbockel at the moment. They're probably the ugliest rucksack in the world, but they're about the right size, and a simple sort of design. It doesn't have a sternum strap, but I think that I could fit one.

I actually prefer the Lug, but it's probably a bit too small.

The Makr Flap Rucksack looks nice, and is tempting. There's no provision for a sternum strap, and that might be a deal-breaker for on a bike.

The Modern Industry Drive is one of my favourites, but is too small. However, I did ask about the now-discontinued Faraday, and apparently a new version is coming in August if all goes to plan.

I also really like the Acronym 3A 9TS. I think that the size (approx 40 x 30 x 20 cm) could work as a small carry on, particularly with packing cubes and careful loading. But I'm not sure how comfortable it'll be to carry with a full load, or how stable it'd be on a motorbike.
