Jamaican uber-producers Sly & Robbie (who have worked with the likes of Peter Tosh, Grace Jones, Black Uhuru Chaka Demus & Pliers, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Britney Spears, Michael Franti and countless others) have been kind enough to let us give away some CD's that they produced recently.  We have a total of 25 here:

      1. Bitty McLean – Movin’ on
      2. Horace Andy – Livin’ it up
      3. Black Uhuru – Live in Chicago 84
      4. Chezidek – I Grade

They love Iron Heart stuff, especially the upcoming overalls for Sly and the SuperBlack vest for Robbie.

We will pop one CD in with the next 25 orders we receive.  When checking out, just let us know in the comments field which CD you would like.  Please give us 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice.

      G

And the CDs they gave you are all top notch reggae albums.

                  Big up!

Maybe you should send some IH denim samples to Damian Marley… he rocks denimz too.

This video was shot during the rehearsals for a gig we gave in Glasgow in january 2009 for the bicentennial of George Burns death (or was it birth?). For those interested, there are a number of vids with Bitty and Sly & Robbie, notably those shot in Japan at the Cotton Club in Tokyo. Now that was something else: best sound ever for Sly's drumkit, for Robbie's bass amps, every technical aspect worked out more than perfectly, fans singing every freaking lyric by heart but not speaking a word of English. All dressed super dapper, buying merchandise like mad, asking permission to touch the tshirts, not stealing anything like in Europe. Man, they were such nice people. We were almost embarrassed by their quasi-devotion… Makes me want to go back there.

Here is a video taken during the recording of Horace Andy's "Livin' it up" album. The song is called "I'm Alive"

and on the same riddim, here is Gregory Isaacs' "Poor man in love". My best recording experience ever, Gregory is my all time favorite singer and everytime I am in Kingston, he comes check me at the studio and sometimes records a song on one of the riddims we are making. In those moments, I give thanks for the life I live!!!

Do you run your own label or recording studio?

We used to get good reggae shows here in San Francisco (90s) but the
last few years have been pretty dry.  We would love to get Bitty McClean
to do a show here... maybe you should link up with a promoter here?
I've got a few names I can drop to you.

I have a label called TABOU1 but due to the slump in music sales I dont do much any more, releasing 1-2 albums per year, whereas in the late 90's I put out 43 albums over a 3.5 year period! That was madness, but a lot of fun.

I now work exclusively with Sly & Robbie because Robbie and I have gotten real close and quite frankly, they are the best musicians I've ever met. Being in the studio with them is always a fantastic experience. And when I convinced Bitty to sign with S&R and me, it was a dream come true.

What we'd like to explore as far as touring is concerned is some way to tour Bitty with the Taxi Gang in the west coast, but I'm not very good for this because I'm based in EU and things work different. So any advise, leads would be welcome.

                            Thanks

This is just plain crazy ridiculous!  TABOU1 was my go to label in the 90s!!!
TABOU1 was one of the main reasons why I really started collecting vinyls/45s.

The albums and recordings you put out in the 90s were practically running tings.
Just from the top of my head (and not going through my records right now), I'll say
you had some wicked releases with Yami Bolo, Michael Rose (aka Mykal Roze), Abysinnians
and a whole heap of stuff with Roots Radics.

Anyways… I definitely did not expect to meet an influential music producer in the IH forum.

                              Salute to you sir.

This goes straight to my heart!
It was fun and enthralling. I was a one man team, making sure to coordinate the various tasks performed by the artwork contractor, the promotion firm, the manufacturing, etc… Just like the director of a music orchestra!

Actually I did only 2 albums with the Radics: Dub Fe Junjo and We Sing Gregory. Before I started working exclusively with Robbie and Sly, I often used musicians from U Roy's band. I produced 2 albums for U Roy, the originator of the DJ style, which appeared in Kingston in the late 60's, and branched out in the US to become Rap music as Jamaicans emigrated to the US in the mid-70's.

Being in the studio is nice, but now I do it more for the sake of supporting fine arts than making money because there is no money to be made producing Reggae music any more. So I'm going to Kingston once a year only. Next time, I'd like to work with Clinton Fearon, formerly from the Gladiators. The man is FRESH still.

PS = influential is a bit too much: Duke Reid was influential, Coxsone Dodd, Bunny Lee, Sly & Robbie, Jo Jo Hoo Kim and his brothers, Joe Gibbs, Harry J, Jack Ruby, etc... now those are names of influential Reggae producers. I pale in comparison, honestly and not just because of my complexion!!!
