There should definitely be a C port on each side.

How often do people plug things into their laptop?

I work as an Android developer, and so there's sometime a need for me to connect my phone. Apart from that I've used a USB hard disk a few times to move files between machines.

I suspect that ports aren't needed that often by most people, and those of us who do require them are more of a corner case. Besides, I'm fairly certain that Apple would point us to a Pro.

It might be that the designers figured that they could reduce weight and power consumption by the compromise. Then again, my Surface Pro 3 is thinner and lighter and has separate USB, Mini DVI and power ports. 😉

The use case that Apple are probably looking at is someone who wants a slick, slimline machine for running Office, email, and surfing the web. The CEO of the last company I worked out had a Dell XPS convertible tablet on my first stint, and a MacBook Air on my last. I could see him getting one.

Then again, my Surface has a USB port for charging on its power brick, which is a really useful feature for travelling.

Apple could deploy a similar feature, but add a data connection. Maybe not an elegant solution, but it'd appeal to the minimalist traveller in me.

And I for one don't like wireless earphones.

Audio port on the right hand side :).

M process is not for you, but it's probably for those who just want to stay cool and have no need for performance, as long as YouTube loads….

Praps, though charging an iPhone while also charging the laptop, or outputting video while charging, etc., all seem like core use cases to me.

iPhone 6 last long enough, so no need (and 6s/7 will be better!). Who does video? These (Edit, specifically this MacBook are consumption devices mate, not creation devices.

Macs used to be the standard for many engineers and designers, I'd say that is creative. Granted that they will probably use desk top Macs mainly, but it does limit those who like portability and connectivity.

Engineers and designers should be looking squarely at the Pro's, nothing but for Professional work. That's Mac Pro and/or MacBook Pro.

I think you misses some context. I was discussing their audio over lightning research. They're looking to go to one and then none ports imo

Disagree. A student spending all day in a library or a coffeeshop will too.

And the consumption device trope isn't even true for iPad IMO.

At the end of the day it's all about the price model for the target audience and their requirements.

I dunno. But Microsoft have always been good at hardware.

Despite being the most uncool and least innovative tech company has been doing some really interesting stuff over the last few years. The Kinect and HoloLens are both radical takes on how computing could evolve.

MCL, aren't they all in the cloud now? with their iPhone and iPad, AirDrop, AirPlay, AirWhatever, and iCloud? Nothing needs a cable, just wifi and internets.

i never trust the cloud and i find their speeds way too slow. airdrop especially. when transferring medium to large files. it just takes up too much time. and i think i'd still prefer a ssd/portable hard disk to store my stuff than the cloud. unless that file or data needs to be with me on the go, then i'd probably sacrifice.

i'd say the mac isn't for anyone of us discussing this here. like mcl said before (i think) or was it me… that the new macbook is for those who care about sleekness and how cool their macs may look and on the occasion, email, web and office doc usage. nothing too fancy for the power hungry and graphic intensive people.

that being said, i'm a 100% apple fanboy. you can't even pay me to use anything microsoft or others. but i'd have to admit microsoft has stepped up their game recently.

Just out of curiosity: does anyone have any experience with smart watches? I wonder what's their durability

I've seen actual watches stop functioning at the shooting range just from the concussion of firing, I'd like to see how these things hold up since they probably don't have any moving parts

i highly doubt their durability. heck that thing isn't waterproof to start with.

A thought occurs to me: I think I fall between the gaps of Apple's segmentation. So I'll be forced to look at the MBPr 13, which is more than I need, but I'm sure something I'll love. I currently have a MBA, and I love it; a decent refresh of that (basically what they did plus a better, not even a retina necessarily, screen) was what I hoped for and what would really work best for me. But perhaps I'm an unusual case. We'll see if they segmented poorly or if I'm a weirdo soon 😎

                                        Think it, be it.

On what students do, I'm clueless, so give you that. Still think they are the main target audience. Guess we'll see over the next year.
