Batman and Superman are the most iconic super heroes yet created, who's the rival? Spiderman? Gimme a break…

They may be the most iconic, but Marvel have more iconic heroes than DC.

        Quality not quantity  😉

Marvel is what the kids read before graduating to real super heroes.

        Batman Returns
        Kingdom Come
        Long Dark Halloween
        Hush
        Man Of Tomorrow
What You Get For The Man Who Has Everything?

Just a few of the great DC titles I can think of without actually going to my shelves, off the top of my head the best I can think of from Marvel are…

        Peter Davids run on Hulk
        Planet Hulk
        Age Of Apocalypse
        Dark Phoenix

I know where I'd hitch my wagon.

DC just doesn't do it for me, Jeph Loeb and Frank Miller excluded.

Missing a lot of good Marvel titles there Gav…

I have 3000 comics back home I'd gladly ship to you, to educate you.

I've been reading this shit since you were a twinkle in your daddy eye sonny, your 3000 would have sat nice in a corner of my former collection before marriage and kid arrived. Drop me a line when you need a history lesson  😉

BTW: I'm now retired from the comic game, I'm down to a couple of hundred TPB's of choice.

I only buy TPB's and digital download now, the cost of comics in AUS is unjustifiable.

Probably Wolverine... Wolverine is considered one of the most iconic comic book heroes of all time.

Stan Lee's biggest regret is that he didn't create the character.

I think we should agree to disagree and end this conversation on a high note...

                        Thread appropriate.

Between them DC and Marvel have announced 23 movies and 5 TV series in the last 2 weeks. Is this overkill of the super hero genre? Market saturation? Or (as I have seen contested) are super hero movies the new westerns?

I think it is getting out of hand with all the movies and tv series Gav. Too many comming out all the time. That being said tho, i have enjoyed all the movies (aside from DareDevil and GreenLantern)

It's been overkill for a long time. People keep buying tickets, though. I've never liked the genre, so I will never understand it.

It's hard to argue with the "modern western" debate. They are just so damn many of these movies. My only hope is that like westerns, people will eventually tire of them (I actually like westerns).

My fingers are crossed that this new Batman/Superman mashup is terrible. A flop here could be a tipping point.

I am just so thankful they are releasing an Ant-Man movie he is such a relevant super hero. I am astonished it has taken this long.  2015 can't get here soon enough.

Huge DC fan as I am I cannot even be too excited for the new Justice League movie after finding that it is all based around "The New 52". Never has a company persisted with such an awful idea for so long, and in so many ways.

At their worst, superhero films have a pretty rigid structure, which involves the hero (or heroine) figuring out what's going on, before building up to fisticuffs in a famous location to a rousing soundtrack. In a lot of cases, the villain is a bigger or stronger version of the hero, particularly the first few Marvel flicks.

Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy really worked because their characters were fun. But the Winter Soldier took a slightly different track, with institutional corruption being its theme.

Marvel has announced nine films, plus there's Avengers and Ant Man due next year. So that's about two billion dollars worth of investment, and when there's a lot of money at stake people become increasingly conservative. I can't see them pulling a divisive twist, like the Mandarin in Iron Man 3, in future. Hopefully they'll prove me wrong.

Of the upcoming slate of both DC and Marvel films, I think that Captain America: Civil War (what's with the long titles?) could be the most interesting, particularly if they play it out against the background of Wikileaks or Snowden. I wonder how it'll compare to Batman vs Superman, as both are pitting their marquee stars against each other.

Doctor Strange could go either way. I've not read a lot of his stories, but the early stuff is mad psychedelia, whereas the newer ones don't seem to get it. Marvel should hire China Mieville to write the script, and force feed
the cast and crew industrial quantities of LSD. 😉

And Guardians 2 should be a lot of fun…
