The BRAVE Mid Wallet explained
The Brave series of Horween Chromexcel wallets emphasis a few main points.
Horween Chromexcel leathers, handmade wallet by Obbi Good Label signature design. Every man should own one or two of such high quality leather wallet with fine craftsmanship.
In this part of BRAVE series, we look at how the new BRAVE MID WALLET was created.
- Design and Functionality
Plain external surface for natural aging in appreciation of such high quality leathers. After some usage, the wallet will form subtly into a clam-like shape, bulging on the middle. 5 inch length mid-sized wallet is perfect for slotting into back pocket/front pocket. Natural curves will shape out nicely with this size.
- The OGL shape (original)
Looking in front view, the shape of the wallet is 'tapered' towards the opening of the wallet. This is an original design by Obbi Good Label. The idea of the shape is inspired by the chinese silver tael (yuanbao), which is the currency during the ancient times. Aptly, it is what we think it should be for a wallet.
- Techniques
When wallet is fold/close, natural edge-out corners will be form on the bending side.This is achieved by a unique crafting technique employ by Obbi Good Label. The edge-out corners not only create a unique curve on the wallet appearance, they also allows for ergonomic feel when holding the wallet.
- Additionally
Well, lastly, we played around with the colours. Matching the underside 'flesh' of Horween Chromexcel leathers, we used different colour leather for the internal part. Example above, a Black Horween CXL leather with a 'khaki' underside, we match it with Khaki cowhide leather.

Obbi Good Label started leathercrafting in 2007. We did not begin our journey of handmaking leather wallets until one year later.
Well, everybody starts somewhere. For us, we started with snap wallets - short, mid and long.
That is where we begin our improvising and establishing our own Obbi Good Label aesthetics for Condor series…
In 2008, when Obbi Good Label started our online store, we were full of ideas. Making every designs, any designs we thought of and putting them up instantly. Frankly speaking, what was more important to us is how people appreciate our work, especially our craftsmanship and quality.
And when Obbi Good Label moved into a full-fledge leather workshop, we realised we need our own style to differentiate ourselves from others.
According to ancient Native American's beliefs, Obbi Good Label's birth month (April), is symbolise by Falcon. Aptly matching our Native Traveller's style and Condor, we decided to use shape of the eagle's feather as the leather design for the snap.
This design not only identifies Condor series as original design by Obbi Good Label, the shape has got ergonomic sense, giving user better handling.
Gradual slide on top with more curvature on the bottom is done by specific measurements that only craftsmen of Obbi Good Label will know. -
Have been studying old way of making wallets, and information is really limited, so we mix and match what other labels is doing and then as usual, implemented it better
At 1st when we thought, it should not be a very fast moving line, because early days, no credit card slots. However we know the modern requirements, we redesign a 3 slot diagonal way, same like our trucker series.
The true reason of this wallet design is also an inspirations from Goros Takahashi, I never own any of his great work silver and leather pieces… but his way of life inspires me to start. For this, we uses genuine 925 silver as the hardware accessories.

Well we know that some customer prefer some easy design, however wanted the twist of full leather. So plain jane, which is the reason we making it the series that is plain, focusing just on the leather natural grainMayan Collections

OGL has been making bags since day 1, but we never put them into a full series of line due to the limitations of leather supplies…
During the trip, I was casually invited by one of our family member, to do a Obbi Good Label trunk show. He mentioned that since we are always making 1 piece customization of bags, tote, duffle and available only locally, his side of clients do queries on our works and suggest to me to do something about it. Coincidentally, I have a long shelved idea, which may come into use for the show.
Every other quarter during my buying for leather, I will chance upon wonderful pieces of leather hides, which normally are too small for a collections or repeative productions. These beautiful hides can only make 2 to 3 medium size bag. We normally dedicate these hides for custom bespoke customer, who really appreciate good leather. However most of the time, to set the customer expectations, some of the hides are not fully utilize in making a better product, but only to a product that is base on 1 side of its requirements (never the side we want….)
So taking this opportunity, Obbi Good Label will be planning to held its 1st Trunk Show in East Asia, we will make 1 each of the bags we made before, and make them available in the trunk show, what you see is what you’ll get. We will bring extra swatches, which you can select mix and match to custom the bag base on the model shown, you can request a little this and that, so that we can fulfill what has been missing in that region.
Date of the trunk show is set on 19th to 21st September, which left me with less than 45 days to make all the bags…. so wish me good luck, I will update here with the pics.
