I bought a cheap no-name one off eBay that works ok.  The only advice I can give would be to try and find one that holds the watch as close to vertical as possible.  Mine has the winders at about a 30 degree angle and on some of my watches that isn't enough to move the rotor.  They just spin around and don't wind.

EDIT: I should mention that my winder works fine, once I propped it it up at at angle.  And it runs on either a plug or D cell batteries.  Nowhere near as nice as an Orbita, however.

Thanks for the advice, I shall look into the Orbita models.  They seem fairly easy to source in the UK.

A cheap ebay model may be worth a punt as well.

Should just get myself an Astron and be done with it.  😃

Orbita winder here as well, has been excellent for the nearly two years I've had it

Thanks Tigerpac for your vote of confidence in the Orbita winders.  I shall definitely be putting these on my short list.

There are quite a few bad stories floating around about some watch winders that are not reliable.  Amazing that what should in theory be a simple piece of engineering can be badly designed and built.

I have a U-Boat Classico CAS that I love (U-Boat gets flamed constantly, personally I think it's a great watch). I think the Submariner will compliment it beautifully.

that's interesting, bought a chrono Sinn 5 years ago, no services and it still runs like a dream (that said the lume is crap). Have considered a rolex sub in steel many times too, but I've always been on the fence. Bit of a cliche of a watch maybe. I know that the "Rolex" brand means that you pay way over the odds for it. than a comparable watch without the status.  That said I do love the classic Rolex look. The boy in me likes the fact that Sinn watches are standard issue for German special forces, but beyond that I've read many times that the U1 is built like a brick s**t house and doesn't mark, and I'm loving it with the tan strap as seen above. Not going to be buying for another year anyway, but a tough choice for me.

Watches by SJX have a comparison between the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and the Bathyscaphe. I know that Giles prefers the former, but I prefer the latter. And there are a few fans of the brand around here.

Hodinkee also have a preview of the Bathyscaphe.

Incidentally, Hodinkee also have a piece about the Ralph Lauren RL67 Safari Chronometer.

I'm not a Ralph Lauren fan, but I like this watch. Unlike others in the collection it's got a fairly mundane movement (some of them use Jaeger, IWC or Piaget), but it'll be pretty accurate.

I like that RL but it's too damn big. To my eye the dial is so expansive that it totally dwarfs the hand set similar to what Rolex has done to the 39mm Explorer I. Also at the price point I would much rather see it on a beefy hand-sewn strap than that fabric. It seems to cheapen the overall look of the watch IMO.

I agree, anesthetist; hodinkee may think it's great, but it looks like something you'd see on a $50 Timex, not a $3500, COSC certified, "premium" watch.

i wanted a high end watch a few months ago & am glad that fire burned out, that would have ben an expensive habit to maintain
