Who are the mysterious "they"? And coke, outdoors? The junkies around here prefer heroin for cheapness, and ease of use al fresco.

Human beings are genetically coded to have cannabinoid receptors in the brain and other parts of the body. CB receptors are one of the most abundant receptors, you are designed to receive THC and other chemicals to act on those receptors. Whatever your political or religious standpoint, the science is not up for debate. To make marijuana or hemp plants illegal is completely ridiculous when cigarettes and alcohol are legal non-prescription substances that arguably produce more damage when ingested.

The illegality has nothing to do with morality and everything to do with money and who is making it.

Live your life the way you want if you aren't harming others and be prepared to represent your choices, nothing to be ashamed of either way.

That said I am a believer in what are termed natural rights... These rights are endowed to us because either we believe  we are the owners of our own bodies or we have been created in the image of a god and in his likeness we are furnished perfect freedom.among these liberties are freedom of thought, speech, privacy, sleep, etc. unfortunately, governments feel that we can not be allowed to be responsible for ourselves; therefore, they must, in turn, set boundaries for our behaviors... Because clearly the government (at least in the United States) has everything completely under control and is a glimmering example of how to be responsible for ones actions... Haha jk on that last statement 😉

Absolutely you could. I have no objection to people using those drugs provided they A) don't hurt others 😎 don't cry when they're aware of the danger of the use of them. To compare the two substances and their effects is not fair as they are very, very different. Everyone must be able to make their own choices in this life and bear the consequences good and bad.

I totally agree. People cannot be legislated into safety, nor should they be.

Junkies don't realize they are harming themselves and once they do, can't do anything to help themselves at that point. If we as a society can prevent it from getting that far, why not try?

I have had several brilliant friends become addicted to drugs and have contributed nothing to society while still possessing college degrees. Society is much better off when people of this caliber can contribute to society, not struggle to get up in the morning without a fix

they can be, to a degree, and should be. I mean we have lines that divide the highways, traffic laws, building codes, helmet and seatbelt laws, laws regarding drugs and alcohol, guns, etc etc. Some are perhaps too restrictive and infringe on personal liberties. But they're not all bad right? And overall they're better than the alternative of absolutely nothing, right? Some kids are saved by child seat laws right?

I could care less about marijuana, I'd actually prefer it to be legalized and taxed. But I'm sure glad meth and heroin and cocaine are illegal, because those are generally drugs of debilitating addiction and crime, and particularly with meth, it is a drug of violence. People using those drugs have potential to affect me and my family.

One thing I have learned is that when people want to do something they will move mountains to achieve a goal. Whether that goal is a syringe full of dope or a PhD in astrophysics. Creating legislature won't stop the drug trade or use, it just makes for a lucrative black market. What society needs is education and support programs. I have known people whose lives have been ruined by narcotic abuse (legally prescribed pain killers that are dispensed like candy). On the flip side I know people whose lives have been enriched by recreational drug use. They aren't for everyone and I believe that people should make their own educated decisions as adults.

yes and this is why an addict will commit a crime, potentially a violent one, against an innocent person, to fuel their addiction

to clarify, are you saying you feel all drugs should be legalized? and do you know people whose lives were enriched by heroin, or meth, or cocaine?

Interesting thread. I as well could careless about substances and have very personal experiences with addiction and the death of loved ones as a result. However when it comes to civil liberties, is no grey area. they are circular in nature. By that I mean each one of the derives its properties from the others and establishes a foundation for them at the same time.

I could name a dozen who claimed their lives were enhanced by substance, whether it not I believe it is not what is up for debate. If an artist feels that substance has given him Insight to create and therefore he produces and therefore he affords to live comfortably who am I to decide if it enhanced his life or was an element of destruction. One persons poison is another mans passion and when we push our own personal opinions on others and forcing them to abandon theirs while expecting ours to be embraced is the minute freedom, liberty and individuality have been surrendered from humanity as a whole. When you address these issues you set precedents for dictation of many aspects of human life. Should overweight people not be allowed to eat McDonald's because it is not enriching their lives and in fact it may be killing them? There is no legislation for these things if liberty is the what we truly seek

Text is a difficult medium from which to draw a complete picture. Tone, inference, and body language are largely invisible. The opinions and views given are my own. While I'm aiming to express myself I wish in no way to inflame or upset anyone by doing so. Whether I do or not is out of my control but that is not my intent. I'll respond in a more concise way tomorrow after some sleep and more thoughtful consideration.

Differing views enrich us all when shared in a constructive manner. I enjoy being a part of this forum for the discussion of denim as much as any other topic that comes up. I regularly see people benefitting from interaction with other forum members whether its about the cut of a jean or the cut of a piece of beef. You guys are great.  🙂

100%. The foundation is acceptance of others, including when other's  beliefs differ from one's own. Being able to openly discuss topics that one may not agree with, but from a place a place of respect and acceptance of another human/person is an enabler for learning and growth.

If one tightly holds onto their views and ideas of the world, as apposed to listening, and respectfully evaluating….well as they say, de nile is not just a river in Egypt :).

I personally enjoy being wrong, it's a huge place for learning and growth. I'm often IRL one of the first to blurt something out to learn if it's right/wrong, and also learn from others. And I'm very far from outgoing, but it helps bring openness to the discussion.

For me all discussions are about respect for others, and acceptance of their views. It's great that as a forum we generally do a great job of this.

(and I do love bill hicks 🙂 )
