Damian… The issue with shrinkage is no matter which way you slice it... Unless you never let your jean touch water they will eventually shrink to their maximum potential. I think most would agree that the best way to approach this is too get a pair that will fit properly with all the shrinkage out of them keeping in mind that a touch of tightness is nothing to worry about because denim exhibits properties that permit an amount of stretch. This amount varies in relation to different fabrics so it is best to research your decision on the tendencies of the fabric you desire. I hope this helps.

My pair arrived today as well. Pre-soak fit was spot on. They're soaking right now and I can't wait to start wearing these until eternity tomorrow 😉

Now to just down a few beers while I wait 😛

Thanks for the advice everyone. Just a few more questions: What is the preferred method of doing the first soak? Super hot water, warm water or cold water? And for how long? Once the jeans are done soaking, should you just roll them into a ball, squeeze the water out and air dry?

It seems that a lot of people on this thread are determined to get the water as hot as possible in the initial soak and I'm not sure why.

Hot as possible gets all the soak out from the start, then you never have to worry about it shrinking anymore

Like jumping into the deep end of a cold pool, might as well get the shrinkage on with!

Definetly do not roll the jeans into a ball and squeeze the water out. If you must lay them flat sandwiched between towels and firmly press the towel to try to soak the water. Rolling them up and all that jazz is going to cause some pretty crazy unwanted creasing

i always do that. not a single problem so far…works best for getting as much water out as possible before hanging´em to dry!

???really??? Carry on then I guess…. I just always assumed this would create the same issue as putting them in a dryer as far as creases in strange places...learn something new everyday I suppose

one towel is on the floor, throw the super wet jeans on it, 2nd towel on top, fold jeans+towel combo (leg on leg) and start rolling and pressing the damn thing!…
takes out most of the water and no unwanted creases afterwards!

ah… Yes this is what i do as well i guess i misindertood when he said rolled in a ball I took this as lireally wadding up in a ball shape and squeezing.. Instead rolling them on top of themselves as you have described

Thanks for the clarification. These will be my first pair of unsanforized jeans and I want to make sure I do things right.

Just curious however as to how long I should hot soak for.

                                Thanks!

I lay them out in hot tap water in tub - use full soda cans to keep then submerged - soak ~30-45 mins - then I put hook-end of a coat hanger through the back-center belt loop of the pants and put the loop-end of the hanger over the shower head.  Once hanging, I smooth out all the wrinkles, and let em drip dry over the tub. As I smooth/flatten them out, it pushes a lot of the water out.  But I like the "towel and roll" idea to get excess water out.

I LOVE these jeans. The 18oz denim is my absolute favorite denim. Today marks the first day of wear. So happy I decided to get these. They're stiff and hard motherfuckers right now but I'm more than willing to break them 😉

Mr. G, is this new batch of the 18oz different in any way than other batches since you and Haraki-san thought it might shrink more?

It shrinks the same amount.  We thought it would shrink more, thus this batch is about 1" oversized in the waist.
