      hey guys,

maybe you guys can help me out with my sizing. when i buy unsanforized denim, what size should i get based on waist measurement?

my 301s at the waist measure at 29". do i get the size on unsanforized where it'll shrink to 29" or do i get the presoak sz 29"? what's the general rule of thumb?

i'm not one to downsize and suffer for weeks 😛

Depends on how much the denim is expected to shrink once soaked. Read the fine print. Most unsanforized denim shrinks to tag size but always read what is available for you to see.

yeah, i usually do. i usually read what the denim shrinks to usually and then get the size where it'll shrink to. i'm lucky, i don't have to worry about thigh and knee measurements as i have chicken legs. 29" is perfect for me. i'm just wondering if this is the general rule of thumb. get the size it is expected to shrink to that measures your favorite jeans right?

That's what I would recommend, yeah.  Some folks will say that you should buy them so that they shrink down below your size and then wearing them will stretch them out to a perfect fit.  Not to step on any toes, but I think that's just dumb.  If they fit properly post-soak, then they won't need to stretch.  They'll be more comfortable and last longer, too.

devils advocate here, you like your 301s that measure 29, if you buy an unsanforized jean expected to shrink to 29, that jean will likely end up after some wear measuring some number larger than 29.
or to put it another way, they will likely end up larger in the waist than the jean you have said you like

my advice, if you really want the jean to end up at a 29 waist in the end (that's what you're saying, right?) you'll probably want it to be a little smaller than 29 post soak

Yeah I can see that working also. But if it shrinks to a perfect size and I wear a belt right from the get go, wouldn't that minimize the stretch?

I would agree with Chris that they only stretch, considerably, if they need to. They will probably stretch a slight amount, with wear, if they've been shrunk to the perfect size from the first soak; but that small amount of stretch is mitigated the next time you wash them. They will shrink back down a small bit, then gradually expand back out a small amount. And continue this process over the life of your jeans. Think of your waist size like fading, it constantly evolves. For this reason, if it were me, I would go for the pair that fits best after a soak/wash. Who wants to spend half the lifetime of the jeans uncomfortable while you wait for them to stretch.

STUPID question, but when doing the initial soak on unsanforized, should I keep the jeans buttoned up or not?

Might make it a tad easier to button them up after they dry, since the holes will be held open, but that's about it.

Has Iron Heart ever considered or might consider triple stitching loopwheeled collars? I know it'd probably be too conspicuously influenced by flat head but that would seriously make Iron Heart tees absolute king. I can dream…

Honestly, I'm not a fan of the Flat Head collars.  I much prefer the ones on IH tees.  I think this is one of those details where you'll probably get as many people against change as there are in favor.  Much like the discussions about the sleeves on the tees (Longer!  No, shorter! No, same length, but more tapered! 😉 ).
