I can justify the boots to myself because to me there's nothing like the sprung toe service boot on the market. Chukkas are chukkas to me. It's maybe not a rational point of view to others but it is to me

sry Ron, can't help you guys any longer on this. the leather samples were sent back to Giles already, so it's on him now!
but you're right, the brown calf cowhide is a really really dark brown…

calf is a bit lighter in color as cowhide is! still dark brown though...

From the photos (another thread), the cowhide seems really dark. Almost black.

That is exactly what leather I want to use for my pair of engineer boots. And I believe the leather would age and fade into a lighter shade of brown with wear.

I honestly, hate ripple soles. I think they are ugly haha.

And that brown cowhide doesn't seem as dark as what I thought it would be!

Since I got the tan Oxford with the ripple sole, I can tell you this:

• They are reasonably comfortable to walk on. Longer walks are no problem.
• Almost no dirt/snow/stuff sticks to it

• No lateral grip whatsoever
• On smooth surfaces you either sound like a tormented mouse or like you're wearing high heels. On hard and smooth surfaces, you get the best of both worlds: A tormented mouse wearing high heels!
• The looks are a hit or miss, take your pick.

Feels a bit weird with the first few hours of wear. You get used to it. It is really comfy and as Takeshi said, squeeky.

totally in love with these
they came with black leather laces and waxed cotton
i opted for neither of those laces and took the brown/black leather laces out of my merlot service boot and used them and put the black leather laces into the merlot
