Forget the gyms and do what Doug did. Buy some kettlebells and move on to Girya Sport or equivalent. Forget the aerobic style workout with kettlebells and do it simply.

Doug, I'm glad it's working out for you, and I should start training more, but is just a additional strenghtening for me…
Did you get those competition kettlebells yet? They're soo much better balanced. They take lifting to next level...

OK.  I need to shape up - what do I need to buy/do?

hmmm, try to find out if there is good trainer or training group that does Girya Sport.  A good trainer/coach /teacher is essential so you can learn correct way to lift.

Buy Competition kettlebells.  like these http://www.spartanshop.fi/fi/10-russian-original  I have 12 and 16. They're enough for now.

              Start working out.

In sport version of there is basically 3 lifts and swing and 2-3 additional lifts/moves you use. So it's very simple and actually very efficent. You don't bulk up, but your core strenghtens. I think the system Doug is using is quite similar to sport girya.

http://www.giri-iukl.com/Eng/org_str_rus.html  you can fing GB's reps phone to ask place near you.

              Some techniques http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFD2EAE762C2BEFBD

This one's my coach, she's world Champion in her own weight class….;)

              Try it you won't regret

Am also interested in what Doug's doing @ home. As I've mentioned before I'm keen to checkout cross-fit, then I saw the prices and want to focus on a more @-home style that enables IH purchases 🙂

My BJJ coach gave me a brilliant (and super simple) kettlebell program that consists solely of snatches:

                  (Always start with a simple warm-up - a few two-handed swings etc.)

                  Week 1 - 6 sets of 10 (per arm)
                  Week 2 - 4 sets of 15
                  Week 3 - 3 sets of 20
                  Week 4 - 2 sets of 30
                  Week 5 - 1 set of 40 and 1 set of 20
                  Week 6 - 1 set of 60

Each week, do the routine 3 to 4 times. Super simple, super effective. Run the whole program with a 16kg 'bell then start over with a 20 and then a 24. You get the idea…

^^ I'm doing Olympic lifting exclusively now so chalk is an absolute necessity. Straps too for doing pulls. 🙂

Usually you're ready to move to next weight when you can do 100 reps consecutively with your current weight with one hand. That's slow, only 10/min for ten minutes 😉

In that video, those are the only lifts + swing you'll ever need. That's why it's so simple.  And what Sport Girya contains

BTW Eve, my trainer/coach/whatever is over 40  😉

Take brisk walked daily, don't believe the hype.

I would like to point out that working out with kettlebells isn't hype, at least Sport Girevoy (Girya) which is aiming for competition (Obviosly you don't need to compete if you don't want to)

And yes, rapid walking is good aerobic exercise.

I'm just saying I used to lift heavily, I also had a short stint with kb routines, no matter how good your form is you always end up injured, in my experience - and the experience of anyone I know who lifts weights. The older you get the worse it gets, I understand alot of people feel lifting weights is heathy, I believe it is not. I say take a hike, ride a bike, go surfing, help a friend move, do yard work, take a walk, play with kids/grandkids. And if you eat healthy th rest is history. Diet is 90% of it anyway, unless you wanna get huge them diet is 80% haha. More power to the lifters out there(no pun intended)

^nerkg, I already swim 1-1.5km 3+ times a week. I also cycle for over an hour 2-3x a week (have done both for last 1.5 years). I'm interested in core fitness, which is why I am interested in cross fit/kettle bells….Well keen to hear from Doug and others (this should all really be in another thread, right?!)

Actually, according to the only proper study I'm aware of in this area, weightlifting (by which I mean Olympic style lifting) is one of the safest sports you can participate with general wight training, powerlifting and bodybuilding not far behind:

Results are in the table near the top of this page: http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/Safety.html
