Chicago is a good first marathon- well organized, flat & fast.  Great city, too.

      Good luck, buddy.

4:42….. so cold in the early morning. when we first started, the race officials wouldnt allow me to use the bathrooms cause our corrals had already closed. they had told me, "there are bathrooms at mile 3." when mile 3 had come along i had picked up some gatorade at the water station and i was frantically looking for a bathroom... i had to really piss. i ended up missing the bathrooms again lol. so i just kept going. i waited til mile 5 holding my piss, finally found a bathroom lol. RELIEF. i stopped for more gatorade. during the first half marathon everyone was in good spirit and there were just mad heads flooding the streets. i stopped at almost all the water stations for some gatorade. i didnt bother using gels at all but i did eat 2 fig bars at mile 15. at around mile 20 i knew it would be all mental and it was beginning to become more difficult to start running again after walking through water stations while sipping on some liquids. it just started to become less congested on turns and everyone was just looking bad. no one was singing or talking. all i heard was terrible form pounding the concrete jungle. just feet bashing the ground. i know they were feeling it this morning. lol at some of the intersections some folks were handing out free beer for the runners. never seen that before. after mile 22 i stopped drinking, i just didnt want to stop anymore. i didnt feel thirsty and i figured i got the rest of it. boy was i wrong. i had to dig deeper than i thought, it was so discouraging hearing everyone curse, breathing hard and walking. UNTIL someone started to play the rocky song at mile 24. lol i beasted. started picking up the pace. when the crowd started counting down the distance i was so thrilled. till the last 500m. my goodness. it was a a minor hill. IT FELT LIKE FOREVER. as we all turned the last corner, we could finally see the finish line. i just started sprinting. right before the finishline a good number just stopped and walked. it was less than 5ft hahaha. i jumped over them. upon crossing, they welcomed the runners with warming blankets and placed medals around our necks. when asked what do we want to do now, i said into the mic, "YO, YO!.... who is down for round 2? nah? no one son?.... aight aight i'll chill"

it was a great race. windy at the interections. BUT I DONE DID IT!

How did you 20k go llvlaglne?

I am five or six runs into my comeback. I would dearly love to run a few races again but more importantly, I would love not to feel any discomfort in my IT band. 4.5 miles is about my limit right now. I used to regularly bang in 18-22 miles so there's a long way to go…

You're stretching it out with a foam roller or rolling pin, right? I've had some IT band issues this year, and rolling it every day has definitely helped. I did a half marathon in October with no issues.

Yep, total love-hate relationship with my foam roller. I think I need to get some more supportive shoes as well to manage my overpronation. Feet just aren't as strong as they used to be.

Yeah, there's nothing more important than the right pair of shoes and replacing them when they get too many miles on them.

I've got a friend who's an experienced sports masseuse and she recommended rolling on a rolling pin instead of a foam roller. Hurts like hell, but really worked for me.

Totally agree on the shoes thing. 'bout time I treated myself to some new Nikes.

I used to use a rolling pin, sometimes with a thin towel wrapped around it, but my foam roller is quite hard and seems to do a good job of getting the kinks out of my legs.

Nah, they've served me well through much of my heaviest training and racing. I've had a few pairs of Marathoner, Lunar Racer2 and Lunar Elite and all have been good. Ultimately, it's what works for your feet. Friends of mine swear by Adidas for example, but they just flat out suck for me.

Most of the people who work at the  independent running shop by my house in Philly wear Nikes.  But, I'm not an expert.  They just say to go with what feels best.

I have a pair of Brooks.  I tried on about 10 pairs one day and they felt the best.
