Based on the appearance on the inside, I'd guess roughout, and the same leather as is used in the tongue.

No clue. I've been looking for some rough outs but nobody seems to be making them other than custom. WWII impressions was sold out and everything else seems to be unattainable or limited

gents, i'm in the market for an engineer boot and thought it might be best to put my question in the viberg thread as I might get some info in comparison.  Really love the Merlot CXL as I'm sure it will age beautifully but would anyone be able to speak on its quality?  Does it come from Horween?  Torn between the Viberg engineer and Wescos in Burgundy.  Anyone able to compare quality?  Both are at right around the same pricepoint

Can't give any info on quality or comparisons between Wesco and Viberg, but I'm fairly certain Chromexel is a type of leather tannage trademarked by Horween.

CXL is a proprietary chrome tanned leather from Horween in Chicago.  Its great leather, but it will "age" faster than normal leather.  Its much softer and pliable right out of the box and requires less break in than normal leather does as well.  Its great though, just not sure it would be my first choice for an engineer boot.

go for horsehide in the engineer mate you will not regret.

my almost everyday go-to-shoe, especially walking the dog as it is with me all the time.

mine are the limited VMC collab for their 25th anni and are approx. one year old.

Finally picked up the Viberg Service Boots in tan roughout from Freemans Sporting Club…

Thick yet comfortable suede leather.  I took a size 8 and normally wear 9D in Aldens.
Pretty fortunate to actually be able to try one on for proper sizing.

Davito, those are beautiful…i adore horsehide engineers as they only get better with age   in an ideal world it would be a custom option for either viberg or wesco.  unfortunately I haven't found any horsehide offerings still available in size 12 US    buco offered a horsehide engineer but it went up only to a size 10, same with becks, and wesco...
