Was in San Antonio today and visited Dave Little's shop. It's a fucking trip going there, so many pairs are exposed, you want them all.
Anyway, I ordered a pair

check out the pair on the right handside and imagine the following: replace the black top by a yellow one with yellow stiching, a black rim, black and yellow ears.
this is going to be fucking dope! Gonna have to wait about 6 months, but I'll be fine. I hope.

I grew up on a cattle ranch in Oklahoma. They mainly train cutting horses, and we usually have somewhere around 500 head of cattle grazing. In fact, here's a picture of my dad working horses in the barn.
It seems like the real "in" boots in the younger ranch/rodeo community where I live is Anderson Bean. They're an affordable hand made boot by Rios of Mercedes, and are probably my favorite daily wear cowboy boot. They may not be the most fashion forward pair of boots, but have real working cowboy credibility, which feels kind of cool when wearing them. I love rocking them and have this pair:

I took some iPad pics today. This is about three years of good abuse. They've been chewed on, stomped on by a steer we were doctoring, and covered in blood. They've stepped in cow shit and walked down 5th avenue. They seem to be my favorite thing to travel in because they remind me of home.

The Little showroom is really overwhelming. You walk in and everywhere you look, there are amazing boots. Sharon (Dave's daughter) told me that whenever they get an order for a really interesting pair of boots, they make two pairs- one for the customer, one for the showroom. Do that for a couple of decades and you have the most spectacular collection imaginable.

It's worth the effort- San Antonio is only an hour or so down the road and the shop is right off I-35. Anyone who loves boots should go if they have the chance.

But in Austin, you have Heritage Boots on South Congress which has some nice boots, too. Not custom made, but the selection is quite nice and better value than most boots sold at Allens a couple blocks down SoCo -
Yeah, it's my only regret from last years fun fun fun fest. I really want to go explore Austin more.

I was just looking through GB's pictures of Dave Little's shop, and I noticed this one of a foot tracing.
I took a look in the John Lobb shop on St. James Street in London yesterday. They're one of the few surviving bespoke shoemakers in the UK, and there was an identical tracing on display. The line inside the outline represents the arch.
It looks like a pretty serious set of measurements. Does Dave carve his own lasts?
Oh, if you're in London then take a look in Lobb's. It's probably not changed in the last century. Unfortunately the shoes are on the far side of reassuringly expensive. :o

I was amazingly lucky a few years back. My cousin worked at Lobbs and once a year she was allowed to have one pair of shoes that had not been picked up for her or one of her family. She let me have a turn, so I went in early on a Saturday morning and spent the day rooting around in the cellars and store rooms. It is totally Dickensian below street level….Anyway I found a pair that fit, so I now own a pair of Lobbs.....

Yes he does, of course. Custom boot makers I've visited in Texas all make their own lasts. The level of craftmanship in this "industry" is quite amazing. Handmade top quality, they regularly get visits from luxury manufacturers like Hermes.
