Most of the boot is HH, with the exception of toe cap and heel stay, I believe. Not mine, but a good indication…

The color of the brown horsehide has lots of depth.

For a beating, definitely, 100%, dress leather. The only problem is that it is so dark, it is almost black, but it does age really well.
Try PM'ing Ed (Demonito), I know he rates the smooth leather too, and I know people also like Bullhide for durability.

Difficult question, which depends mainly on how often, and what you treat the leather with, and how long you are willing to age them.
