White's Boots
-
guys i wanna get myself a pair from buildaboot.com but i don't really know what specs to get and what to avoid.. could i get some assistance?
-
No problem.
Leathers
Ed will tell you to avoid chromexcel, and it does mark and scuff easier than most other leathers to be honest. I have oxfords in chromexcel and SDs in dress, of the two I would go for dress leather as it is much harder wearing and evolves beautifully.
The exotic leathers are really a matter of your personal taste, but be warned that water buffalo is very thin and can split.
Sole/ midsole
A double midsole will obviously give you a little more height, but can look a little "clunky". A leather sole is very popular, but can be not practical if you live somewhere wet, like me. I favour a vibram half sole, and a single leather midsole for versatility.
Style of boot is entirely down to personal preference, along with colour etc….

thanks! that was a great help! all the leathers you just told me to avoid i was considering getting… thanks alot!
-
No worries man, glad to help
-
and by the way, what leathers would you suggest? are the brown dress & smooth good enough?
-
Brown dress is great, but it is almost black. I've not got any experience of their smooth leather, Ed (Demonito) is the man for that.
-
I second brown dress. It is awesome and it looks almost black. I have brown dress sd with single leather sole.
-
hi guys do you have images? the computer generated ones on buildaboot really give me no idea how the boots will look like in person

White's Semi Dress
IH-TFAC / Brown Heather
IH-634S

oh my, this is brown dress? it looks totally black! or is it dyed black over brown so that it'll age nicely into brown?
-
No idea how they do it but it looks brilliant. The color is pretty close
-
my black chromexcel. I like CXL, it does scuff easier but it has a character that the dress leathers seem to either lack or take much longer to develop. -
Regular White's (non-dress) leather is already rather soft considering it's thickness and keeping in mind it is not tanned and or stretched to death (like most fashion leathers). I agree that Chromexcel is tad bit softer and the depth of the color is quite amazing, but after I got a pair (which I love) I would not order another one in Chromexcel, since it need that much more care. Second from the left are black Chromexcel.

same build up as my 4 year old jumpers
I think your boots below are the reason I got into this whole White's madness with a total of eight pairs so far (sold a few, bought some others, am pretty stable at the moment).

Nicecrackaction, would it be possible for you to post any more detailed pics of your black CXL boots? Worn/aged pics of CXL seems kinda hard to come by….

Oh, lest I forget to ask…Megatron, when you have a chance, would you be able to post pics of your Bakers Oxford soles? I know I know, im a shoe pervert, but whatever. How stiff are the oxfords compared to the SJ or SD's you have?
-
Tough thing to picture, but hope the is ok for you.
Just read your dilemma between the Whites and Vibergs oxfords, I can relate as I had the same issue.
I handled the Viberg version at 14oz in Berlin, and in my opinion they are not $200 better than the Whites/ Bakers.
