I'm with Megatron, I think boots (or shoes to take it one step further) for any season are key to any list. When I was selling outdoor gear, we were told you can always find shelter, hide under a plastic bag, or dry out your clothes, but if your feet aren't happy you aren't going very far today!
My three main essentials are as follows though:
Boots/Shoes - Blundstone 550s, my everyday workhorse all around boot or a quality pair of hand made oxfords/derbys.
Jeans (IH634S) these were my first full on pair of decent jeans. Up until last year I didn't know what I was missing!
Leather Jacket - I think everyone should have a decent leather jacket (unless morally or philosophically opposed of course!). My current favourite is my Aero Highwayman.

I think a leather is important, but not essential if you have a rugged, tough jacket of some other description. I have a vintage 70's, NYPD issue Schott Perfecto 602, which is in absolutely beautiful condition. These days it is only produced for the Japanese market, and retails at 93'000 Yen ( £760 or $1200), and the modern version is inferior to mine as all the hardware is repro, not original, it's an amazing jacket. I would (and do) choose my IHM-01 over it every day of the week.

Patagonia Torrentshell - keeps me protected from the elements in all but the coldest weather
Strike Gold crewneck sweat
Iron Heart shirting - currently SH-23, SH-38, and SH-43
Plain white or grey Ts

Beatle Busters (21oz)
Uniqlo boxers and melange socks (is everyone else going commando? )

I bought them from the old Bape store in Osaka 6 years ago, and I have beat the shit out of them more than any other sneakers I have ever owned, nothing that Nike or Adidas have ever shown me can touch them for pure resilience, they are simply great.
