I don't live there, so just a quick comment:

Edinburgh is in many ways a beautiful city. Especially the areas around the castle with old, soot-stained arcitecthure and small alleys.

Food is… fried. Lots of fried food everywhere. Hard to find something that's not fried 😛 but that goes for Ireland and Scotland in their entirety. There is a few really nice asian restaurants in town, I think the best Chicken Satay I have ever tried was in a small, subtle asian restaurant.

Must sees? I would recommend going to the top of the observatory tower. AMAZING view of the city. Another point is the holyrod hill with a view over the city.

Other than that, try to avoid the city during the fringe festival unless you love crowds. The city is crowded in this period.

Seize the day and don't you cry.

The most beautiful city in the UK, lots of history and character. Incredible building, friendly people, cosmopolitan atmosphere, great nightlife, a real "explore on foot" city.

If only they hadn't fecked it up with the half built over budget and now abandonded tram system, the place looks like a building site!

Princes Street does, but the Royal Mile and the Cowgate are still stunning. The messed up bit is the uglier part anyway  🙂

Around the Royal Mile there are plenty of really nice, and cool local bars and pubs serving locally produced food, all of which is extremely nice. Shopping wise, it doesn't have masses of interest in a clothing sense, but there are some interesting boutique type stores around the Cowgate and Haymarket regions of the city, the rest is fairly standard fare (H&M etc…).

There is a thai restaurant, which I can't remember what's called OR more than approx where is, but I loved the food 😃

If you are renting a car/going a bit about, let me know, drove a roundtrip in Scotland last year and hopefully I can come with a few more interesting tidbits than the one above.

You were going to glasgow too, right? I still recommend the huge graveyard by st. mungo's cathedral.

We will try the Thai restaurant for sure!

I have been to Scotland in my early days quite frequently - I still remember Edinburgh fondly.
My wife though, being American, has never been to England or Scotland - so we decided to fly over, rent a car for 2 weeks and roam the country side. The plan is to fly into Edinburgh, next to Glasgow, get around Loch Lomond and Luss, off to Isle of Skye, over to Lewis & Harris, maybe Thurso and Orkney, down to Inverness and Loch Ness. That and all the castles along the way should do it.

Isle of Sky is great! Say hello to Storr for me! 😃

And Orkney.. really, really beautiful. Quite a few sad/melancholic experiences too, like Wick, being a skeleton city now that the fishing is gone.

Foxy, Orkney is so nice and so was Arran Isle as well when I visited last summer. Edinburgh didn't do much for me, I'm sad to say. Inverness seemed nice enough though, had the best lunch of the trip at a restaurant called The Kitchen.

Will keep that in mind if we make it or Inverness.

Edinburg is not our top priority, but our entry point - good enough for a day. Might want to drop by Aero Leathers on the way out…

We went last year, to St Marys Court, the old underground streets, great tour, very atmospheric.

Had diner at Dusit yesterday evening - definitely recommended!

The city was pretty much how I left it 20 years ago - did the Royal Mile, Hollyrood Palace and the town. The wife loved it.

The Witchery is an amazing restaurant near the castle, or it was last time I was there, you will need to book.
