I know this sounds cliche, but are you sure your tastes won't change in the next 5, 10, or 20 years?  Perhaps it's better to start with a small tattoo that can be more easily hidden or removed.

You should also do a Google search for "tattoo regret".

For the record, I don't have any tattoos.

Tattoos are just too marking, if you know what I mean.

I think it can look good and is interesting when it is elevated to an art form. There are perhaps 1000 people on earth who have done that successfully and have endured much physical and monetary pain for that. The other way is when it is done as part of a strong and historical social ritual, e.g. prison or Maori tattoos.

Ordinary people with ordinary tattoos as body decoration, I don't know. I find that "un peu a cote de la placque" as our French friends would say.

      But hey, it's your body.

For the record, I have one, small on my back (twin and I had them done over 15 years ago). Can see the attraction/addiction, love watching Miami Ink from time to time…..don't think my wife is a fan of too much ink though !

I got classic sleeve on my left arm, thinking about right now but got no money hehe.
Advice: go straight home after session and wash all dried blood with soap and hot water, so you get nice thin scabs which heal very quickly. Also I personally have some kind reaction to ink on first session (but ok on next one) and got fever later, another reason why to go straight home. Do not use vaseline and such as it contains petroleum and will damage ink while you heal.

wow jeansboyusa, that's pretty big for your first tat. more power to you. all i can say is the older you get, the more it hurts. most of mine are filipino tribal patterns that have been researched… relating to family members, origin, country, region, etc. so every pattern has a meaning. but it is also taboo to tell people indepth about them if they are not blood related. here is what i have so far:

my immediate family on my right side (only pics i have at the moment  ;D) Celtic band is pretty old (i'm part irish also  🙂 )

my new family on my left side with the cover up (starting off with my fiancee  🙂 )

with my artist from hawaii…. aisea.

once i have kids i'll fill them in on my lower left arm.

Pete, that's what I'm talking about when I say they have to be justifiable. Those are. Looks great on you, too.

Pete! Wow! Excellent. Thanks man for the pics. So cool and inspirational. I absolutely love the work. Very well done. It is that level of artistry that I am going for. Stewart, I knew you would have at least one! And Till, I definitely hear you. The thing is, I have been planning this tattoo for months. I was joking when I said the jeans made me do it. I researched and interviewed artists, found one that "got" my vision and will only settle for a true work of art. This is not some simple body decoration for me. I collect contemporary american art and each year, for my birthday, I commission a new piece from an artist I admire and respect. This year I decided to commission a piece from a tattoo artist with my body as the canvas. Oh, and Dr. Pat, I did google Tattoo Regret and read a lot of postings. Ricochet, thanks for the advice. You got a pic of your sleve? I would love to see it. Thanks everyone. I knew I would get an ear full here. Glad to get it.

Good luck with the tat JeansBoyUSA. As you probably guessed, I don't have one. The nose piercing is the wildest decoration I have. I like your tattoos, Peterrock1, they are striking !

ricochet, thanks for sharing! That's a cool sleeve. I like the tears and the rose. And I checked out the link to the French artist (thanks Stewart). Wow. I think it's a bit too modern for me. But it's interesting to see the medium evolving. Not too long ago it was just skulls and anchors. Now it is really becoming an art form to be reckoned with. I go on Friday. Am starting to freak out. Yipes!

Well, I got it on Friday. Took 2.5 hours to do the outline. Go back in two weeks for the fill in. Hurt like hell. I'll post a pic when there is more to show. Right now it's just an outline. But I'm happy with it. Still a bit freaked out, but overall happy. Thanks again all you guys for the support, advice and pics.
