Love the Bikkembergs. Those are very cool. Get some Burgol sole conditioner for your leather soles. Works great. And also use some sole edge color. It makes a huge difference in how well kept your shoes look.

LandoCal, you have nice friends/family ! What a lovely gift ! I'm not much into shoes…Danskos and running shoes are it. It's funny...reading this forum, I think you men are far more particular and into fashion than I am ! Yeah, I like IH jeans but that's about it !

If you own a pair of IH's - you should own one good pair of leather boots. That being said - RW for authentic rough workwear , Clarks Dessert Boots for the city tour - or Alden Indy's cause they are perfect for every occasion..

Try the J. Crew knock-offs of the Clark desert boot. They are even simpler in design and the leather is nicer. A bit more expensive but at least not everybody has them. Love the RW and Indies, too.

For the really stylish occasions (or a daily high dose of luxury), I got the Weston 631 Beaubourg Chelsea boot designed by Michel Perry:
                    http://www.jmweston.com/home.html?#en/1-1/-1/15/145

The special feature with this boot is that the upper is made of a single piece of leather with the only seamline being in the back center. I've seen a lot of very beautiful shoes but these stood out so subtly that I had to get them.

After tooling around on the web a bit, I might forego the Alden chukkas for a pair of Frye chukkas…I really prefer their stacked leather heel I think...

Any suggestions for gray boots?  My favorite boot brands (RM Williams and Red Wing) unfortunately don't make this color.

The Clarks desert boots in grey are pretty sharp

                            Some of mine:

                            LL Bean Chippewa Katahdins

                            Red Wing Gentleman Traveller

If you can figure out the color, you get…props for figuring out my twisted mind

And my absolute favorites, my Frye Riley Harness. I've been in a lot of places with them, done a lot of crazy shit in them, and when I die, I'll be wearing them. I actually just contacted Frye to have the harness tightened up since they're stretching out and drooping

And these are next, not the Aldens

I hear rave reviews of the Aldens, but I love Frye boots and these just spoke to me

Till, your eye for detail is impressive to say the least….I love the one piece feature on the JM Weston....been looking for some boots to use to commute in (I wear traditional Churches once I arrive) and your comments got my digging on the net for some one piece with non-leather sole.... I found these, nowhere near as stylish as your choice, but given the conditions and route I walk, they will do...I have just emailed a retailer in Australia to try and get a pair of the Saddler model(in Walnut)....

Till, given your taste in quality and well made items….I had my first bespoke suit tailored 19years and 11 months ago (for my 21st birthday...hence the precision with the age) It still fits perfectly and has an occasional outing....(given styles have changed). Since that first suit, only ever purchased bespoke, all have lasted many, many years, ( I never over dry-clean).

Thanks for the kind words, Stewart. And most of all thanks for that link to the Baxter boots. I had never even heard of those and love them. Those are really, really nice.

I have some MTM (not totally bespoke) suits, too. Great stuff. The ones that are about 12 years old still look like new. Not over cleaning is the key. And it helps to have a good dry cleaner which frankly isn't easy in crappy Austin. Unfortunately I have gained at least three inches in the waist so I don't quite fit them so well anymore. I am trying to lose some weight, successfully so, but might still have to get them alterated a bit.

I have also discovered a great source for suits in Paris. Often you get a well made suit from Cerrutti or Dormeuil cloth for $300-500 or so. Sure, it's not bespoke but they can make some alterations on the spot and they are really good with it. The store looks like nothing but is a super insider tip. It is Mirene on Rue de Rivoli close to the Hotel de Ville.

With the Westons something funny happened. The Westons have a punch hole at the back of the heel right next to the center seam on top. This is their trademark. They say it is where the cobbler nails the leather to the last. Well, I didn't know that and went back to the shop to complain. Very embarrassing. Still, I have other handmade shoes and they don't have that hole. I think it is a questionable sign of distinction. At least they now know me as a demanding customer. I didn't accept the first pair they showed me because of a crease in the upper leather on one boot. He said that was normal. I said to have them bring another pair from another store. The next pair didn't have the crease, of course. Otherwise service was great but I can't stand to be given BS by luxury product sales people. They should know that their clients might know the product better than they do and are smarter to boot (pun intended).
