I better get some more in, just sold the last one in Medium.  Think I may take an L to Japan with me.

Is that the new Ironheart leopard-print bag on the top right  🙂

Are the zippers and clasps on the duffel bag metal or plastic?

The Leopard Print Bag is my girls…

The Zippers are all metal. The clasp on the messenger is plastic. And the strap for the duffel is connected to the bag with plastic straps. I have thought about changing the strap on the duffel if it ever breaks? Seems to be holding up nicely. As for the messenger bag, it is a pretty small one and does not necessitate a metal clasp like those of http://www.chromebagsstore.com/ although it may have been a nice touch.

Oops, missed the part about the zipper

The plastic used for the straps are the highest density I've ever seen on that type of clip. I used to carry a lot of tactical gear, but the clips used for IH bags are so overbuilt I'm thoroughly impressed

Personally, I prefer the plastic on those types of attachments over metal because they don't scratch up things like metal attachments do

The other reason I prefer plastic over metal attachments is because (this is where the tactical knowledge comes in) if the bag gets caught on a car/train door, the plastic will break before I get dragged behind the vehicle.

Correct for the scratching. Also they are less noisy when you bang against something. However, the breakage point will not be the buckle itself but where it's sewn on the fabric (IH or not). Unless you have a glass buckle the sewing will rip out before the buckle breaks.

Some of the nicest hardware you can find on bags (and some of the nicest luggage anyway) is that on Andiamo Valoroso bags and that on Redoxx bags. Check them out. They are all the rage on the travel forums I frequent. I own a whole collection of Valorosos that I got at heavily discounted prices because usual prices of these are as if they were (and they are) the Vuitton of nylon luggage.

Tfar, not completely sure that the stitching will rip out before the clip will. The ends of the strap on the messenger bag are sewn into an X pattern…unless the strap itself rips in half...I really don't see the stitching ripping before the plastic snaps...but that's just my opinion...

Been using this bag as my carry on for the last couple of years. Been holding up great

                                http://www.tadgear.com/shop.php?id=508

I beat the crap out of these, had the first generation (they're up to their fourth), wore it into the ground after a few years, then TADGear replaced it for free, so I'm using a 3rd generation bag now. When I trash this one, I'll trade it in for another one.

Kind of unbreakable like IH's but I don't own one myself.

Last night while carrying around my duffel I accidentally set it down too hard, breaking a bottle of Knob Creek… Needless to say, my duffel is out of commission at the moment after a thorough spray down and hang dry. Still wreaks of Whiskey, but I guess it could be worse.

I did some checking on this, and was wondering where you got this information?

As I was told, according to mil spec standards, the buckle should break before the stitching so that someone can't be choked out/dragged by their pack

Common sense and the fact that I've sewn and worked with textiles quite a bit. I also doubt that IH duffels are built in accordance with American Mil specs, or are they?

Of course, it will be possible to engineer such a combo where the buckle breaks before the stitching, but is this the case here?

It would be relatively easy to test this but it's a very theoretical point. Let's just hope we are never in a situation where we get dragged behind a train due to our bags.

Honestly, I really hope the buckle snaps before the stitching. I've lived in NY all my life, and using the train and bus is a way of life…I've seen more than a handful of people dragged when a door closes on a bag. Someone was killed on the subway not that long ago by this method.

I have a pretty wide array of tactical nylon over here from TADGear and Maxpedition, the IH bags are built just as tough. I can take pics of the attachment points if you want, but I'll just say for now that the attachment points are bartacked with 2" bartacks...twice...
