Read this 'Leisureguy's Guide to Gourmet Shaving': http://amzn.to/AbIvjC

It takes some practice to get the technique down (it is much different than shaving with a cartridge razor - ie: you don't apply any pressure when shaving - you let the razor pass over your face and the weight of the razor does the work). You may encounter some small nicks, but take your time, take it slow, and the whole multiple passes and taking into account the direction of the grain of hair is very important - you won't get all of the hair in one fell swoop so don't even try (unless you want terrible razor burn).

Also, expect to spend some money once you get into it - razors, brushes, blades, shaving creams, shaving soaps, and after shaves/balms all provide a very different experience - and to be honest it makes shaving fun. But, before you go buying tons of stuff use your current set-up for a month to get the hang of it - shaving, building lather, etc.

Also, while Feather blades are great - they aren't for everyone, and don't work well with every razor… Blades are great because they are cheap, so it is easy to 'experiment' and find one that works well for you.

There a lots of places online to buy proper shaving equipment: http://www.bullgooseshaving.net/, http://www.royalshave.com - so browse around. And, as this is a blog devoted to Iron Heart/denim - there are multiple blogs devoted to a proper shave - http://www.baderandblade.com, http://www.simplyshaving.net

Never seen one of those Chirs, but I'll check it out. I just use a Gillette Fusion Power, takes me 5 minutes to go down to the bone every morning  😃

I used to shave (me head) with a standard Gilette razorblade, but now use an electrical razor… The one you mention seems convenient though, Chris... Does it basically work the same as a standard razorblade?.. Assuming it's a bit safer?..

Yeah, it's essentially a standard razor, just with a funky ergonomic handle.  I like it because it's easy to use in the shower.  Usually less than 5 minutes and the finger clip keeps it from slipping out of my hand when it's wet.  Uses a wide variety of standard replacement razor blades, too.  Most important thing to remember is to keep the wheels on your scalp.  Lift them and you will cut yourself.  I hacked my head a couple of times really badly before I finally learned that lesson.

The Head Lube is really good stuff, too.  Way better than any other shaving cream/gel I've used otherwise.

Just shaved for the first time. Def need to get some better shaving cream but it wasn't as difficult as I imagined it would be. It's actually easier than any blade I've ever used, and obviously much sharper. I think I'm gonna like this alot. Can anyone recommend a good shaving cream, brush, etc. I've got a razor and blades so far.

and I only knicked myself in 3 places the first time

I would start with a cream because they are easier, such as trumpers or floris. Tabac is a soap that's easy to build a great lather with. Get a badger brush, and there are quite a range in $. How much are you wanting to spend?

I guess you could say I'm not really that hairy, so I probably only shave about once every 3 days. I don't want to spend a ton. Maybe a couple hundred.

all of this shaving talk makes me want to try it out again…
I only do dry shave myself once in a week, since I always get massive skin rash as soon as I wet shave (jaws and throat).
I don't know if I'm  doing it the wrong way or if I'm using the wrong stuff (pretty much looks like it though!) but after trying it out multiple times I don't think i wanna try it again since it's always back to the same problems...
I'm having an appointment at the dermatologist on friday since I still have to fight with skin rash/ingrown hair on my jaws for almost 3months now, after I've last wet shaved... 😠

anyone having this sort of "problems" as well sometimes?

I read somewhere that has to do with the bacteria that grows in electric shavers. People have different responses to different shavers. After I read about all the stuff that grows in them and the recommended process to clean them (it's a pain in the ass), I switched to disposable razors

Not sure how well they work, but when I did have an electric, I had a cleaning system that I would use after every time so I hope bacteria wasn't the issue.

I think the cleaning process involved soaking just the heads in 80% isopropyl alcohol after every use for 30-60 mins, rinsing with water, and then letting it dry for four hours

Never made a lot of sense to me since I have 5 minutes before leaving the house…
