Since we are at home I'll take the opportunity to show you the current state of the affairs with our new home for the next 3 years…

It is a very tiny apartment in a pre-revolutionary building in the center of Moscow, tucked away in a quiet side street. Most things can be reached by foot or metro. The metro station is only a block away. It consists of a medium sized living room awaiting our furniture from Germany. So far, it houses our guest bed/couch and a TV.

I spend a good portion of the day trying to hook up the TV with a IPTV box. This box is of local providence, local language setting, no hand book and all online information available is in the local language, too. This will most likely be the source of a lot of future entertainment…

I managed to get 8 Russian programs out of this box…

Here is the view from the window into the back yard.

I believe the building you can see is part of the Spanish embassy.

In all rooms and above all windows we have motion detectors.

In addition to the security system all doors are massive…


You have to get through 2 of these babies in order to get into the apartment. Not to mention the house doors and the concierge. Pretty scary, but people try to make me believe it is necessary here.

Place looks really nice. Can't imagine you residing in a bad neighbourhood, though… What are the security issues the locals have told/ warned you about?..

Burglaries, breaking in through windows, etc…

There is a lot of black and white here in Moscow and not much in between. A lot of extremely rich people and not always for the right reasons. So, a lot of envy and vendetta related stuff happening.

People are very cautious about protecting their property/fortune as they have absolutely no confidence or trust (and frankly speaking very little reason for doing so) in banks, insurance companyies, police, government, state or jurisdiction.

Did I mention the panic button our new landlord gave us - I thought that was way over the top.

I used to say in a hotel on the right between the the airport (cant even remember whether it was Domodeddove or Sheremetyevo) and the centre of Moscow in the early 90's.  Some dude got shot in the bar one night whilst I was trying to enjoy a quiet pint…...

This morning - getting ready for work…

Today is last day at work for this year!
Tomorrow morning around 5:30 we get picked up and head for the airport. We'll fly from Moscow to Frankfurt to LA to Portland for Xmas with my wife's family.

After work we went straight to the catholic cathedral in Moscow for a little music: J.S.Bach - Weihnachtsoratorium

On the way home through the streets of Moscow…

Packing and a few hours of sleep before we are heading west.
