Hey guys, it doesn't get that cold here in the winter, so this is my winter jacket: http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/outerwear/cotton/PRDOVR~37001/37001.jsp

However, I'd like to waterproof it if I can, any suggestions?

                    Thanks Mega

BTW, the 3M Scotchgard website says the average American spends $641 on clothing and shoes per year. That's hilarious!

Or try Nikwax spray on or wash in. Or if feeling flush as it works very well in my humble Collonil 🙂

The only reason I mention the spray, is that you can direct it to the areas which you want to waterproof, unlike the wash in stuff. I've used Jack Pyke and it works extremely well, but ,according to the research I did, the Scotch guard gets the best reviews.

Purchase and proxy including shipping is 20USD. Otherwise, go for something that has at least some organic fat in it, these usually tend to last longer before you need to re-applicate

I agree on the spray totally but find it's better to have as a top up to the wash in as you'll go through loads of it for outerwear.

Really? This is the first time I've used it, and they claim that it's good for a "whole season" (whatever that means), without re-treating the fabric.

It's just like anything, it's all a matter of how much you use it. If it rains alot, I'll probably have to reapply often.

Whole Season? Unless they have moved on a whole league in the past year i'd only believe that with light wear and light rain as no chance a piece that is not waterproof by nature is staying waterproof after application with  continued deluges of heavy rain, i mean even DWR on brand new Gore items wears off eventually.

This was one of the few Filson jackets that I hadn't seen in person. I finally saw it and then had to buy it immediately. It will be an everyday jacket during the winter in NYC for me.

Just an amazing jacket. 8.5-oz. 100% cotton oil finish Shelter Cloth lined with 24-oz. Mackinaw Wool.
I'll post images if anyone is interested in what it looks like.

Please do as i am very interested in how this pans out. Or you could avoid all the spray stuff and grab a Ventile instead 🙂

Hey Mega, I tried the waterproof spray from 3M Scotchgard. It's essentially a wash in except more precise. Directions say to spray on the clothing and then dry the item on low to medium for 45 minutes. I just sprayed my J Crew jacket and it's not in the dryer on low. I like the spray better because I can focus more attention on arms and shoulders, where water would hit more often. BTW, took a whole bottle for one coat.
