there is only a very very small handful of people that can properly recondition a pair of antique tailors shears properly and when i saw a couple on ebay i called for help on the forum. instantly got a couple of PMs I know more would help but couldn't.
this is the amazing thing that Giles has created here. When these showed up my partner said "really? you could be a 13 year old kid behind a computer for all they know" yep and that is the trust this forum have with each other.
HUUUHE thanks to Jaco for doing this for me out of his own time and paid for these first out of trust.
can you believe this pair is almost 100 years old?! the one behind it is what it should look like now.

great story Jimmy.
The trust thing is a positive assumptive, it aggregates - yes there will always be a random douche but trust begets trust, the very occasional betrayal of that is just a modest "cost" that can be absorbed against the overall positivity and integrity of the forum hive.
These are new times we live in, different modes and models of trust have to be evolved over the narrow bandwidth framework of email/forum interaction - I think it is very interesting.

Just gave Michael "The Denim Doctor" a ring… Twenty quid for the taper job, should be here by the end of next week... Seemed like a relaxed guy... Talking to me about what he was gonna do... As if I was getting surgery
Best part was about the postage... "I'll get a quote cause ya know, these Iron Hearts are quite heavy!"... -

I will be getting my PhD some time in November most likely!
Also, I got a job offer in Kanata, Canada (outside Ottawa), and I am taking it.
I have only ever been to Canada before for the interview, so I know nothing about it. I am moving there around October 15th. Suggestions and information is appreciated!

Congrats on your accomplishments and new job.
Ottawa is the capital city of Canada. It is a city with 2 official languages (English and French). Kanata is the high tech hub of Ottawa, it is about 20-30 KM away from downtown Ottawa. Never been to Kanata myself, but if you are in Ottawa, be sure to visit the Parliament Buildings, skate along the Rideau Canal in Winter (the largest outdoor skating "rink" in the world I think), visit the Byward market, Royal Canadian Mint, Canadian Museum of Civilization. Tulip Festival in spring. They have a Winter Carnival (Winterlude) each year (in the French speaking side… Gatineau). Shopping is a bit boring, as the stores close early everyday. Can always go to Montreal (1-2 hrs drive) or Quebec (3 hrs drive) or to Toronto (5-6 hrs drive I think). Good place to work and raise a family ;D. People are friendly. It will be chilly in October, so pack/shop for warmer clothes and prepare for long Winter.
