        @riffblaster:

        i like any form of art that is motivated by the simple desire to create and express as opposed to "art" motivated by gaining popularity or making money.  end of story.  it's really not hard to tell what's real and what's fake.    I like all forms of music and anyone here who knows me or knows anything about me will tell you that i truly do live for it.    Heavy and aggressive music is a very wide and varied pallet and if you don't have an ear for it, or a frame of reference of where to place certain things within the spectrum then you are going to be lost.  That said…. I generally find myself reverting to the "classics" when it comes to heavy and aggressive music.  rarely does something new come out that really blows my mind.

        do i really listen to this kind of music?  of course i do.  is it all i listen to?  of course its not.    i listen to music not only for the sonic textures musicians create (in their own personal style),  but also for the fact that even though stylistically things can sound completely opposite of each other they can still convey the exact same angst or frustration or happiness or sadness.    all music is created by people who all feel the same fucked up emotions and they all express them differently.  its hearing their interpretation of those fucked up emotions that is interesting.    i also obsessively want to know what makes an artist tick.  who were their influences, and who influenced their influences?  i think when you begin to dig into music's history its possible hear the connection that alot of this stuff that has been posted lately to previous more "accessible" music.    if you were riding in my car with me you'd be just as likely to hear gillian welch as you would disfear, and then jump to hound dog taylor and the houserockers.  if its good, i'll probably dig it.

        Riff…you and me my friend, are on the same page with music and the appreciation of it.  I actually couldn't agree more with your statements about all art.

        Lax, it is very clear that you are a young buck.  I don't mean that in a bad way but you are just starting to come into your own and figure out your identity and you are going to look back in a few years and be amazed at the difference in your tastes.  You will still appreciate that stuff that got you started but that stuff will also give you douche chills thinking about it.

        oh man, I'm getting old talking that way.  fuck

          I think I listened to this everyday of my freshman year of high school(98'). This is what all those screamo bands want to sound like.

            @barun:

            I love all kinds of music, really all kinds.  I would almost say that I live for music.  I can get behind pretty much anything if it is done well and played in the right environment (except smooth jazz/easy listening type stuff).  BUT, I don't really understand the stuff you guys are listening to above.  I have enjoyed it at times (getting tattooed, before a hockey game, etc).  I know music is more than just what you hear, it represents who we are and all that but do you guys listen to that driving in your car (not on the way to commit a violent crime).  I mean like driving with your girl, going to dinner, "hey baby, check this out", hit play and some guy is fucking screaming bloody murder in front of a group of musicians playing as loud as they possibly can?  Does that happen?  I really don't mean to knock it.  I know that it takes talent and it makes some people feel the way they are looking to feel when they play it…I just don't understand how that can be someones primary source of entertainment.

            Riff, El, anyone else, I really would love to get your feedback on this stuff.  If you guys dig it then I really am behind you guys but please help me understand.  If it's something that I can understand...

            I enjoy a wide variety of music. and yes I do this:

            "I mean like driving with your girl, going to dinner, "hey baby, check this out", hit play and some guy is fucking screaming bloody murder in front of a group of musicians playing as loud as they possibly can?"

            It's because she enjoys that style of music as well. But, there are many more times when I am listening to stuff like Tom Waits, or Steve Earle. Or classic stuff like The Beatles, or Zeppelin. Or even old country music. It all depends on where my thoughts are at the moment.

            I know some people who listen to one specific genre and don't go beyond that. I just can't relate to that.

            I do really enjoy heavy music, but it's not my primary source of entertainment. There's just so much stuff I'd miss out on if it were.

                I met my girlfriend through music as well. I joined a band she was in, and fell in love with her. Luckily she had a crush on me for a while so it was pretty easy. LOL

                          My gf pretty much hates everything I listen too. That still doesn't stop me from playing the new Disma record for her in her car on a nice dreary Saturday morning. I told her it was the best death metal record in years. She was unimpressed.

                                  El, Steve Earle is in my top 5 of all time.  Very happy you mentioned him.  Again, I wasn't knocking the music, it's just music that doesn't invoke emotion from me…

                                      Such a weird video, but somehow I find it quite uplifting…  😢

                                      Very interesting discussion btw, like Barun it's hard for me to grasp why people enjoy this kind of "aggressive" music. No hate,  I really appreciateted the insight!

                                      Personally I've been listenening to a lot of Hip-Hop lately because I found a lot of nice underground stuff that made me believe in it again. But like many around here I listen to all kinds of genres, as long as it somehow touches me emotionally. Sometimes I can listen to music purely on a technical level too, appreciating bass lines, drum fills and such... But mostly it just boils down to a gut feeling, a simple reaction like "I'm feeling this!". Or not.
