Not sleeping on the black this year.  Picking it up the moment it hits.  I've been wearing the shit out of the blue one from last year.  My favorite piece of clothing by far.

think i'll go with the grey, might be some blood spilled when this arrives. . .

The return of the Melton (IHW-01).  You wanted Charcoal Grey?  You got it…...........And notice the detail change from previous years, satin lined yoke..........

How much warmer is this shirt than an ultra heavy western flannel? (an IHSH32 for example)

I would say easily twice as warm.

It tends to retain heat a lot more than the flannel.

I would actually say the complete opposite. I find that the IH medium to heavyweight flannel shirts are much hotter than the wool. There is a reason the IHW-01 is my favorite IH top, because I am most comfortable in any weather with one on. Just my opinion, sorry if I confused you. I just think this shirt is the most versatile shirt in the whole IH catalog, that is why I will be getting my third and definitely not my last!

I just re read that paragraph and it sounds awful, but hopefully you get my point. Too tired atm to correct it.

I think the fundament difference between this and the ultra heavy flannels is that this is wind proof.  On a fair day in January I can ski in this in the alps…...

It really reminds me of a thinner version of the classic norwegian woolen outer wear (vadmel) (http://www.feldbluse.de/assets/images/FeldbluseM40-1.jpg). Perfect for conditions like this: http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/035/5/3/winter_storm_iv_by_cainadamsson-d38aygt.jpg

Wool is special because it keeps you warm even if it is wet.  I wouldn't go so far as to call it water resistant.  But anything is better than cotton.

I find the Melton warmer than the flannel.
