IHJ-49 - Split Steer Modified Type III Jacket - Black or Brown
-
@Transporter I must have a newer one or something because mine has really nicely finished button holes and the buttons are like butter from brand new.
-
@borosillykid Good on ya, mate. Mine is pretty new as well, bought a month ago. I actually don't mind the nice, tight specs. Much easier after only a few days with this one. My J-64 was one tight virgin for a few weeks.
-
@Transporter I bet that's a sick jacket though wow. I'm trying to decide if I want the black split steer too but I probably don't need it I have 8 IH jackets and my gf kinda said I'm cut off for the time being lol. Plus I have two OD jackets already so blacks kinda covered haha. I wish I had a horse hide to check out as I absolutely love a stiff firm jacket.
-
@borosillykid Hahaha, hey gfs don't count! Tell her if and when you get married, she has a say. A man needs his jackets, jeans, boots, knives, tools, bikes, trucks, gear, toys of all varieties. Once you get married, far more complicated finding more space, for example, for those must-have, custom Viberg marbled black shell cordovan boots and Black Jack elephant boots that arrive in the same week. Ugh! When the wife sees them, I reply "these old things? Got them used from a guy on the boot forum." LOL
Having said that. Giles wasn't just marketing when he says that IH's chrome-tanned horsehide is the best he's found. Smells glorious and takes a serious lickin' as bikers would want and looks great. The J-64 is beast of a jacket armor with a great break-in that molds to the body like the 21 oz jeans. I also have the SB Blattwerk work jacket horsehide that smells like olives and velvety smooth and no break-in from day 1. Two totally different vibes.
-
Oh another thing about the brown split steerhide. I wore it for a day with only a t-shirt, and noticed that after about 8 hours, a black ring around the collar. This material absorbs any oil (including natural sweat) readily. Best to give it a Saphir Super Invulner spray coat when you first get it if that would bother you.
-
@Mizmazzle How do you like / wear this compared to the 14oz 295? I know fairly different, I want both but need to prioritize and not sure what should be first!
-
@natefreezy well, they are two completely different garments with their own attributes.
The 295 is a shirt (albeit a pretty thick one and can definitely be used as a light jacket during the warmer months’ cooler evening) But I wear it like a shirt, often times with the split steer layered over it in the colder months. The IHJ-49 split steer is a full on, heavy weight jacket. I’d say with a tee only it could live in the 50-65° range. Layered over a UHF I find it comfortable down to 32°. Of course this varies based on personal tolerances, but maybe gives you an idea.
Is this the type of info you’re looking for? They are both top tier in their respective categories for sure.
-
@Mizmazzle Yeah thanks! Totally understood very different pieces, just wondering if you found yourself getting more usage out of one or other or fit in your wardrobe any differently from how you thought.
Do you have any pics wearing two together? That would be cool to see!
On split steer, for fit with a tshirt would you still take same size as UHF or go down size? Same size is probably more versatile, would be nice to be able to try both on but not practical.
-
@natefreezy I’m a large in all my IH shirts and jackets. But if I was only going to wear the split steer with a t shirt, I would size down to a medium.
With my size large, I think it looks ok with just a tee, but much better with a layer underneath.

Does anyone in here own the Type 3 that 3sixteen did with Schott? Either the Copper Roughout or the Goatskin? I'm just wondering what the weight of this feels like compared to those.
-
@thread-and-steel this jacket weighs around 4-1/2 pounds. Hope that helps.

I own the 3sixteen type iii collab they did with Simmons Bilt in chocolate suede (and the IH split steer in black). Both the 3sixteen and IH split steer are substantial in weight and quality but the IH Split Steer feels heavier and thicker.
-
@natefreezy hey brother man. Sorry this is so late. I realized I happen to be wearing the combo you requested a few weeks back so thought I’d post it for you. Also with just a tee shirt.
-
Nice @Mizmazzle! Thanks for sharing. Looks good both ways to me!
