          I don't have a good answer
          I like my cheapo D40
it just takes good pictures, is small and light
does enough for me, good cheap lens options for it
considerably less than $500 with kit lens

but gotta know what you need it to do…
need video capability? (D40 won't, most newer cams will)
do you have any lenses already? (stay in same family makes sense)
$500 body only, or with lens?
          care to buy used?
there's just so many good cameras out there now...

A point and shoot might be more up my alley, come to think of it.

I'm very much about durability and, as many of you can tell, I'm not afraid to pay for something that will last, as I know I will put it to good use. However, it will be an introductory camera and I do not intend to be taking pictures professionally. It is just something I would like to start carrying around with me on a regular basis as I feel there are many things that I have come across and not necessarily appreciated during my years. I'd like that to change.

Video capability is not essential, as I doubt it would be something I would use. I would prefer for the lens to be included and I am not averse to buying used, given that it hasn't been beat to shit.

              if you don't need video
the D40 is quite enough of a cam
durable, the battery goes and goes forever
              small enough to carry often
(though not pocketable, if that matters)
but there may be better newer cams, I just can say the D40 is plenty good
(I take most my pics out and about with my iphone 4)

Anybody tried the Mustang Paste (horse oil) in the web shop?

Yep.  Works very well.  What I have found is that with Oberneufs, you occasionally get some white blotching when you apply (which does go away, but does cause a missed heart beat at the time).  To date, I have not seen this happen with the Mustang…....I have not done any comparatives though......

Obenauf's darkened my boots quite a bit, but I actually like it so no harm done… I'm not using it on my OSBs though... But I have some Venetian creme incoming, of which George said it doesn't darken your shoes either...

The reason I'm asking, I've been using mink oil for the last years, mostly on black leather, with good results. Raw IH leather patches darkens some with each application, but only makes it look better. It's greasy, though, and takes a while to fully absorb (leather might feel oily for a while), and it smells some.
Heard that you shouldn't apply it to often/frequent on boots, as it might soften leather too much and make it less durable.
Is Obenaufs like Bick 4 in consistency?

Curious about this as well, since I use Bick 4 on all my leather stuff…

Yeah, I hear you. I just wanted to make sure it didn't cross the line into utterly ridiculous. I feel as though they're dark and roughed out enough to go with murdered jeans.
