Whilst we're on the subject of cars… I am sensible car owner (modern Seat diesel), I have to commute 25 miles each way. However, my colleague's father has a Merc for sale, like this: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C138452/ - but a petrol model. Since my dad died I have been hankering after a Merc (he used to run a late seventies 350 SEL), so for the sake of large chunk of sentimentality (and some retro charm) I am seriously considering getting this Mercedes. Does the collective think that it will be a time/money sink and a dreadful daily driver?

that's actually a cool idea. Check this site out: http://www.eaglegb.com/ - they will sell you a modernised version of a classic, epic money but it would be the perfect combo of old and new.

That Merc, all be it in coupe form is my absolute dream car.
 Uber cool as they say.
If it works for you, buy it, your dad would be proud.
I lost my mum 8 years ago and it's nice to have something that brings back good memories.

Thank The Lord Krishna (Jesus, Mohammed, Allah, whatever…) that I'm not into cars. I have a Honda Insight (hybrid) -- year 2000 when it was first made, 90K miles -- and that's all I need ! I bought the car used 3 years ago, but I drive very little in The Bay Area. I live < 5 miles away from work, and I take BART to SF/Berkeley.

I like those Insights Shubz, Honda were really ahead of the curve, cool shape too. A bit impractical – only a 2-seater. But it's just me and Mom (or my dog) most of the time -- so I don't need more than that. Plus, when we have group outings (with my sister's family or with colleagues for a lunch-out), nobody ever expects me to drive -- which is a BONUS !
