Exactly the same thing happened to Pam's MacBook, but she was going from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. My plan is to reinstall her OS from the original disks and then restore her last time machine back up.

The only weird thing is that when I tried to restore from her time machine backup straight away it did not recognise the external drive.

Continuation of this horror story, I have had to completely erase the HD, re-partition it and restore from time machine back up of Leopard. I then have to reinstall Snow Leopard and finally reinstall Mavericks and hope it doesn't crash again.

Megatron, you don't need to install Snow Leopard to upgrade to Mavericks. Yes, I know it's an official requirement, but you can get around it. I did.

Basically you need to edit a config file on your hard disk. There's instructions here, and it's relatively easy to do if you're at all computer literate.

          http://www.macworld.com/article/2056564/how-to-install-mavericks-over-leopard.html

What I'd do is build an installer disk onto a USB drive from your machine, wipe the hard disk in Minitron's and go from there.

Anyone fancy a red Mac Pro? It's going to be in the RED auction towards the end of November with an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.

Is the iPad mini the sweet spot? I've got an iPad 2 64gb 3G right now and am planning on upgrading to an iPad air or retina mini.

I sold my iPad 3 after I got a mini. It's a better form factor and weight by far for me.  Can't explain why but I just found I never used the 3 once I had the mini I'm writing this post on.  It's getting A7 too, with Retina, compelling as Hell.

                  Think it, be it.

I was thinking of selling my iPad 3 for a mini awhile ago, but didn't. Jody and I will both watch a movie on the iPad while on vacation and the extra real estate is nice. Plus I like to play video games on the iPad, and the extra real estate is nice.

To be honest, I never felt that the iPad was cumbersome enough to make it smaller, but that's just me

I was tempted by the iPad Air, but being broke gave me the extra pause to realize I would rather wait for the next gen to come out so aftermarket accessories like screen protectors and keyboard cases will already be out for it

Yes, I'm such a gigantic nerd that I have a keyboard case for my iPad. Jody has forbidden me to bring my work computer or Blackberry with me on vacation (there was near violence the last time I did), so once in awhile something will blow up and I can work on my iPad need be. It has just enough functionality with the iWork suite that I can put out fires

I know violence is not the answer, I got it wrong on purpose

To answer your question, I can't really think of any reason to get a mini if you're happy with a full size iPad.  We've got a first gen iPad and two minis, and the mini doesn't seem notably better in any respect, aside from the lower price.

Especially if you're getting iPad Air, since it's so much lighter.

Basically, if you read and browse the Web primarily, I think mini is a better form factor.

If you do a lot of typing, gaming, and other shit, maybe you need the larger form factor.

After just using the iPad 2 on the plane ride to Vegas I will not be buying a mini. Would be too small for watching videos imo.

The iPad Air kicks ass. Apple May have lost their way on UI design and may suck at services, but they continue to be the world's best hardware manufacturer without a close second. The A7 is astounding, basically an Intel-class ARM.

Just tried downloading Maverick onto my MacBook Air.  Now it's telling me install failed and my Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired.  What the fuck!

Did you manage to get this sorted JCar?

I had to take Pams Macbook back to a freshly reinstalled version of Snow Leopard, update that, then install Mavericks and finally put all her files back from the last Time Machine backup…..what a ball ache.

Yes I did but not until I erased my hard drive and reinstalled Lion.  Then I was able to install Maverick.  I did lose pictures and programs since I never backed up my stuff with Time Machine.  After doing all this it wasn't worth the few new changes I got from Maverick.  Massive ball ache indeed

The new version of Mail is seriously broken when it comes to interacting with Gmail. If you can't get email program to work with one of the biggest providers then there is something badly wrong with your QA department.

As far as I can tell, Microsoft are now being more innovative than Apple, and have better quality control in place. Surely there's something wrong there. 🙂
