I think a lot more can depend on the artist as well though. My chest was cake aside from a couple places over my sternum and up next to my collar bone. My back was a different story, half was pretty easy (my neck was actually in bad shape and needed surgery through it), but the rest was laid in by a gentleman that I swore was using a butter knife to hammer ink in. No abdomen or leg pieces to compare to it, yet. However parts of my arms were as bad as anything on my chest.

I think, legs are next, my left leg is 100% tattoo-virgin. -

Yes, I got luck, my first artist is my only artist, we became friends, visited concers, visited the Vater & Sohn shop… Good dude!!! He is now into Red Wings and Old Timer Mercedes, he just got a "new", picked it up in Hamburg from a ex-PIMP

I may get a large backpiece the next months…friday I'll meet the Artist. I must admit, I'm a bit scared because of the huge area it will cover...but then it won't change much, as my extremities are already inked.

I have some pretty awful tribals from the late 80s I'd like to have covered soon. I'm thinking of full sleeves and a back piece, preferably something Japanese, in multi color. What do you think of the ones I already have, any ideas of how to cover them?

your tattoos are typical "badge" style tattoos that newcomers often "collect", and in their own right are ok. with hindsight, most people that i know have said "why didn't i just go for the whole sleeve / back piece?" so you are on the normal tattoo progression I would say.
regarding the cover up, i would seek professional advice from a tattooist who is going to do the work for you. your existing tattoos are fading so, i reckon, wouldn't present to much of a problem to cover.

Thanks @denimhead, they are from late 80s, I guess you're right when saying I wasn't thinking too much about it back then. Tribals were the big thing in those days, after having them for 25 years I just want to start moving on.
I already oicked an artist, gonna go there next week to see what he will suggest.One thing I definitely wanna have is a samurai wearing full armor except a pair of IH denim

what i didn't say in my previous post was that i am also one of those guys that collected tattoos like badges only to later wish that I had also gone the whole hog. instead, i tried to develop my individual tattoos into more complete pieces by encouraging the tattoo artist to get creative. in my case this method didn't achieve the same results that an all out assault on your arms / front / back / legs etc, by way of a big complete coherent comprehensive piece, can and would deliver.

My artist has some Jugensünden, too. They (he and Fabian Nitz) embed the tribal and the cross into a pretty sick frontpiece. Thats a pretty honest way to deal with stuff like that.

I've been thinking about a half sleeve tattoo for quite a few years now, and I think that this is the year to finally nail down my design - it's still evolving, but 2 of the details that I'm sure about are that it will be Japanese, and contain a phoenix.
The undecided bits are
- full colour, splashes of colour or just black and grey
- should I incorporate my only other tattoo, Scottish Clan badge (family crest) on my right shoulder, (which is approximately 20yrs old and looking in need of a refresh), or not?
- artist, although I've got a couple of recommendations from friends of good London based artists I've not yet been to talk to any

You're probably right, and I wasn't intending to cover up the old tattoo (should get a picture and put it up really), but wondered if it could be incorporated as part of the new one, although that may well prove too tricky. Either way the old one will need some remedial work to freshen it up as I was a bit thinner when it was done, hence some of the lettering is a bit blurry now

Keep your old tattoo as that sounds really special to you and IMO splashes of colour. My tattoo artist wanted to do mine just black and grey but I eventually went for a little colour and glad I did
